JBWere reveals pandemic led to massive drop in charitable giving
The inaugural JBWere NAB Charitable Giving Index has today revealed an unprecedented decline in national giving since records began. The biggest drop in more than 40 years ago comes despite growth in giving from high net worth individuals and corporates.
The dramatic fall in giving led to an overall decrease in donations by 16% in the 6 months to December 2020, taking giving back 5 years to levels last reported in 2016.
For-purpose organisations in the arts, education, social services and housing sectors have been most impacted by the drop in donations. Health and international aid organisations meanwhile managed to perform well during the same period. Environmental causes and religious groups also only experienced minor drops in charitable support.

Putting the fun into fundraiser

FLANAGAN’S Bar in Traralgon is the place to be on Sunday.
The venue is playing host to Our Kinda Country, an annual fundraiser for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.
Organisers have promised this year’s festivities will be ‘twice as special’ having had to cancel proceedings last year due to COVID-19.
“This year’s event is two years in the making,” spokesperson Dawn O’Connell said.
“We’re looking forward to an absolutely huge day.
“This is our 10th edition and we’ve raised more than $25,000 for the Royal Exchange Hotel’s Cork Club, which raises money for the annual Good Friday Appeal.”

Beyond ticking the box: Creating shared value in Australian social procurem

About this Event
This roundtable will start a discussion on how Australian social procurement in the construction and infrastructure industry can be transformed from ‘ticking the box’ framework into a genuine, collaborative process of creating shared value with meaningful and sustainable social and economic impacts. Our guest speakers are from Transurban (Sustainable Procurement Manager, Deepen Somaiya), Ability Works Australia (AWA, CEO, Sue Boyce), Social Traders (Engagement Manager, Rebecca Green) and Apricot Consulting (CEO, James Natsis). In 2019, AWA and Transurban built on their existing relationship, establishing a Shared Value program to increase employment for people living with disability. This program now includes academics from RMIT University, Aurecon (design engineers) and Apricot Consulting (shared value project management). The program has clear KPIs and governance (including executive attendance), delivers in-kind training and consulting to AWA in research, strategy and communications/ government relations, resulting in AWA delivering a new accessibility consulting service. Together, this partnership has been awarded the Social Traders Social Procurement Partnership of the Year Award for 2020. The presenters will share their experiences and lessons learnt from this program and share their reflections and ideas on what creating shared value in social procurement means for them, how it can be enacted, and what challenges and opportunities for creating shared value in social procurement exist in Australia.

CFA members raise over $1 million for 2021 Good Friday Appeal

Message from Chief Officer Jason Heffernan
Raising money during the Good Friday Appeal is a staple of CFA’s identity among Victorian communities. Many have memories of riding the fire truck and greeting members as they come past, sharing the joy of hearing the siren and seeing the flashing lights.
That is why for me it was an honour to present this year’s cheque alongside members from Berwick and Narre Warren fire brigades to the Royal Children’s Hospital on behalf of all CFA members.
CFA members raised an enormous $1,028,328 for the Royal Children’s Hospital, which will be used to buy medical equipment and ensure kids are provided with the best possible treatment and care.

Bruce Clark column - Do Racing Australia want jockeys to do their job?

To paraphrase a successful senior jockey – 'good riders don’t need instructions and bad ones don’t follow them'.
I note this in the wake of another messaging own goal coming from Racing Australia in a seemingly bizarrely timed Good Friday eve statement announcing an amendment to the Rules of Racing in relation to riding instructions.
This is the one that cemented jockeys only receive riding instructions from a trainer or owner of the horse they are riding.
Again in seeking – in RA’s own words – they didn’t want jockeys to be confused by receiving “conflicting riding instructions”.
Where did this come from? Where were the serious concerns raised, discussed, tabled and wrapped into this change? Which were later written away as merely formalising a “chain of command”, if you can get your head around that.

Good Friday Tins at the Ready
Local volunteers and emergency services personnel are uniting in their fundraising efforts for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.
After missing out on tin rattling last year, volunteers such as John Vandeven, Captain of Albury Civic Station for Fire and Rescue NSW are looking forward to hitting the streets with their fire trucks and connecting with their local communities.
“To see the people who have saved all year – numerous children that have got their piggy banks and loose change that they save all year, lots of people love to see us and it was so disheartening last year when we couldn’t do it due to COVID,” John said.

One day as a firefighter for face of GFA

One day as a firefighter for face of GFA
One of CFA’s brigades that have been heavily involved in fundraising for the Good Friday Appeal has hosted the face of this year’s appeal.
Two-year-old Malu Hunt, along with his brothers and parents, visited the Werribee Fire Station on the eve of Good Friday.
Werribee CFA volunteer Peter May has been leading the brigade’s fundraising efforts for several years, and said it was an honour see the young family come through the station.
“I was pretty chuffed to have the face of the appeal here,” said Peter.
