Brett Anderson on his memoirs and life in Sussex

As one music critic observed, Suede’s swaggering, self-consciously arty intensity was especially seductive to a generation of misfits and dreamers turned off by lager and laddism. Theirs was an innately English aesthetic, and they sounded quite unlike anything around at the time.
“We wrote about drama and sex, poverty and passion – subjects that hadn’t been touched on in pop music for years,” says Anderson. “We wanted to pick over the minutiae of British life and celebrate it. We pretty much kicked off what became Britpop, and for a very limited time, we were proud of that.”
At the age of 22, Anderson, who cultivated a Bowiesque androgynous look which was a homage to his 1970s music heroes rather than a reflection of his sexuality, became, albeit briefly, one of the best best-known faces of his generation.

Brett Anderson 'proud' of 'strange' Coming Up

Brett Anderson is still "proud" of Suede's third album 'Coming Up'
The 'Beautiful Ones' hitmaker views the group's third LP as an "odd little pop record" but he loves the fact it still represents a snapshot of the Britpop era and admires the lighthearted touch to the songs he wrote for the album.
He said: “It's a strange record. It's a sort of an odd little pop record but it kind of summed up a little bit of a moment in 1996, which is nice and kind of what you do as a musician (and) that you hope to do as a writer.

Brett Anderson on Suede's classic album, Coming Up

There were further alterations to the Suede line-up for the creation of Coming Up, with keyboardist Neil Codling joining. “He just sort of fitted in with the vibe of the band,” Brett told Chris. “I’ve said it before, but he was a Suede person. I don’t really know what a Suede person is, but he was one. He balanced us all out.
“He joined as the keyboard player, and because of that he was always very aware of not disturbing the dynamic of what makes a guitar band work. He didn’t want to come in and say, ‘let’s make a keyboard album and sound like Richard Clayderman.’ He was always quite respectful of that. He was very aware of what made Suede tick.

The JOE Music Quiz: Week 51 | JOE is the voice of Irish people at home and abroad

There is also a place in the United States called Area 51, which is a hotspot for UFO enthusiasts. The top-secret US Airforce base in the Nevada desert is rumoured to house aliens and their technology.
Perhaps most significantly of all, the Mayo footballers last won an All-Ireland in 1951 and we don't want to go near any discussion of the supposed 'curse' behind one of the most famous droughts in sport.
So, apart from the movie, the UFO hotspot and Mayo's last All-Ireland title, 51 has little to offer us in way of milestones. But it is the first step of the next 50 to take us onto the magical century. We just cannot cope.

Britpop

British pop music. Short, jumpy, dry, fresh pop songs, in a standard format, usually with a standard lineup of vocals, guitar, bass, drums, possibly organ. The 'plainvanilla, no additives' in pop music.

In the mid Nineties, the phrase Britpop in the UK became synonymous with indie, Manchester, Madchester, Blur and Oasis. We were suddenly presented with a surge of fresh faced youngsters all ready to recycle the best that guitar pop had to offer from the last thirty years. The genre was principally championed by DJs such Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley from the Evening Session, Manchester's Mark and Lard and indie stalwartJohn Peel. To my mind (and off the top of it, at that), the quintessential bands from the Britpop of the Nineties are:

Suede: how the androgynous indie pioneers gave me pride in my bisexuality

Last modified on Mon 25 Jan 2021 10.53 EST
I was late to the Suede party, only getting into the band when they released snotty pop cracker Trash in 1996. There’s nothing like a convert to make a true zealot, and at 17, that I very much was. Received wisdom at the time said that the band were doomed without recently departed guitarist and musical magician Bernard Butler. I didn’t agree. I loved Trash, and while eagerly awaiting new album Coming Up, bought their second record Dog Man Star from Woolworths during a rainy family holiday in Falmouth, Cornwall. I spent the rest of the trip poring over the CD booklet, staring at its cover of a naked man lying in front of a window, and obsessively reading the extravagant lyrics of sex and love and jealousy. Holiday over and reunited with my CD player, Dog Man Star and Suede took me over, and changed everything.

It seems anachronistic now, but singles used to matter. I mean,
really matter. Having a catchy song hang around the upper echelons of the chart and gain heavy rotation on radio and music TV (remember music TV?) was the gateway to million dollar record deals and your album selling by the truckload, a causal link that just doesn’t exist these days no matter how many hits, views and likes an artist can rack up.
Don’t believe me? Len’s ‘Steal My Sunshine’, due for re-release through Alcopop on the 16th June, shifted an alleged 16,000 copies per week at the height of its popularity back in 1999, and led to their album
