With the release of Netflix’s 'Halston', a new revival is at hand: not of the line, but of the personality that for a comparatively brief – but glittering – moment, ruled the fashion world with devastating simplicity.
Netflix has just released a five-part series based on the true story of fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick. He became the most iconic designer in 1970s New York, with Calvin Klein calling him the “greatest American fashion designer who ever lived”. However, his lavish lifestyle led to his downfall and Halston lost control of his fashion house and his spending before he died.

Roy Halston Frowick was born on April 2rd, 1932 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was the second son of Norwegian-American accountant James Edward Frowick and his wife Hallie Mae. Halston is said to have taken an interest in fashion from an early age, after watching his grandmother sewing. He began creating hats and alerting clothes for his mother and sister.
Halston, the mononymous American fashion designer whose stripped-back, body-freeing take on luxury â caftans, halter dresses and acres of Ultrasuede â was a defining look of the 70s, continues to fascinate.
Maybe that s because his career, now more than three decades in the rearview mirror, still feels so contemporary, both in terms of his aesthetic â riffs on his shirtdress are everywhere and when haven t caftans been a thing? â and his business strategy â including the once-novel concepts of brand extensions and diffusion lines. Or maybe it s because the dramatic arc of his career from anonymity to high-flying celebrity designer to scandal-page fodder makes him seem like a victim of Me Decade cancel culture. Whatever the reason, Halston s life seems to be perennially ripe for exploration in books (including Steven Gaines Simply Halston ) and documentaries (most recently in 2010 and again in 2019). And now, a five-part miniseries.
