LONDON â Britain on Wednesday became the first country to give emergency authorization to the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, clearing the path for a cheap and easy-to-store shot that much of the world will rely on to help end the pandemic.
In a bold departure from prevailing strategies around the world, the British government also decided to begin giving as many people as possible a first dose of coronavirus vaccines, rather than holding back supplies for quick second shots, greatly expanding the number of people who will be inoculated. ....

WASHINGTON, Dec 18, 2020 (BSS/AFP) – The IMF’s steering committee on Thursday picked Sweden’s Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson to lead the group, the first woman to hold that position.
Andersson will serve for three years atop the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC), the group of finance ministers and central bankers that advises the Washington-based crisis-lender’s board.
She succeeds Lesetja Kganyago, governor of the South African Reserve Bank, who has chaired the IMFC since January 18, 2018.
Andersson has been finance minister since October 2014, and held numerous posts in the Swedish government.
The 24-member committee meets twice a year, typically in April and October when IMF and World Bank members gather for the spring and annual meetings. ....

Sweden's coronavirus response criticised by King Carl XVI Gustaf

Nearly 7900 people have died from COVID-19 in Sweden since the start of the year compared to 961 in nearby Denmark, 466 in Finland and 395 in Norway.
Adjusted for population size, the death toll is about 10 times higher than Norway and Finland and about five times greater than Denmark.

However it is lower than other countries in Europe which opted for hard lockdowns during the first and second waves like the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Italy.

The IMF s steering committee on Thursday picked Sweden s Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson to lead the group, the first woman to hold that position.
