Today In Johnson City History: Feb. 17


Feb. 17, 1898: The Comet alerted readers to a smallpox scare. “Miss Lena Anderson, teacher in the high school of this city, left for her home in Jonesboro yesterday, where she will remain until the smallpox scare is over.”
Smallpox is contagious and often fatal, and can be prevented by a vaccine. There is no treatment or cure for smallpox.
Jonesboro was spelled that way at the time.
Feb. 17, 1900: The Knoxville Sentinel, with a Johnson City dateline, reported, “It is positively announced here that ex-Gov. R.L. Taylor has bought a residence in Knoxville from Col. William Caswell. ‘Our Bob’ expects to make his home in Knoxville in winter, and will spend the summers at his Johnson City home. This information is gained from Dr. Walter J. Miller, Gov. Taylor’s brother-in-law, of this city.” ....

Famed for his Mark Twain one-man show, actor Hal Holbrook dies at 95
In 1985, actor Hal Holbrook told an interviewer in Kalamazoo, Michigan, that American humorist-writer Mark Twain “has become integrated into my whole life … no matter what the subject, he’s always a tremendously amusing wise old bird.” By that time, Holbrook had been performing his one-man show, “Mark Twain Tonight” for 31 consecutive years just about the midpoint of its run. The actor went on, “I think it would be a pretty good idea to keep doing this every year until I drop dead.”

Hal Holbrook, who carved out a substantial acting career in television and film but who achieved his widest acclaim onstage, embodying Mark Twain in all his craggy splendor and vinegary wit in a one-man show seen around the world, died on Jan. 23 at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif.
