U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) last month said he has spoken with state legislators through the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) about passing state bills that restrict voting rights and impose greater legislative control over how elections are run.
In a live-streamed video on April 19, Paul told Kevin Roberts, executive director of the Texas Public Policy Foundation, an affiliate of the right-wing State Policy Network, that he has “been speaking to legislators through ALEC” about conservative electoral reform priorities since the November 2020 election. ....

Fight for Alaska cruising gets a boost from a surprising source: Travel Weekly

Johanna Jainchill
A case is being made to revisit the 135-year-old shipping law that could be the stranglehold on Alaska cruising this summer not by citizens of the 49th state, but of the 50th.
When it comes to cruising, Hawaii and Alaska appear to have very little in common. More than half of Alaska s tourist arrive via cruise ship every year, while they accounted for only 1% of all Hawaii visitor arrivals in 2018, according to the nonprofit Grassroot Institute of Hawaii.
That organization, a member of the State Policy Network, an umbrella organization for a consortium of conservative and libertarian think tanks, is joining forces with organizations in Alaska to call for reform or repeal of the 1886 U.S. Passenger Vessel Services Act (PVSA). ....

State Policy Network Partners With RealClear to Promote Its Right-Wing Agenda

April 29, 2021 - 1:10pm
In the Trump era, news and poll aggregation website RealClearPolitics took a rightward, aggressively pro-Trump turn, according to
The New York Times.
As it did so, its funding from ideological, right-wing foundations increased considerably.
The result?
Real Clear became one of the most prominent platforms for elevating unverified and reckless stories about the president s political opponents, through a mix of its own content and articles from across conservative media, per
The Times.
During that time, RealClearPolitics owner, RealClear Media, secretly operated a far-right website and a connected Facebook page that churned out racist and pro-Trump memes.
The publication s nonprofit, the Real Clear Foundation, funds its investigative stories, some of which have been so unsubstantiated or so ethically concerning that other outlets, including conservative ones, and social media giant Facebook steered clear. ....

Major Right-Wing Funders Push Supreme Court Case Against Donor Disclosure

April 26, 2021 - 10:45am
The U.S. Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments today in
. The case challenges the constitutionality of a California law that requires nonprofits operating in the state to provide regulators with a copy of their Internal Revenue Service (IRS) form listing their largest donors.
The Americans for Prosperity Foundation (AFPF), a $19 million nonprofit in the vast political network of billionaire Charles Koch, and its allies argue that the rule infringes on their First Amendment rights and will open donors up to harassment and deter their giving, despite the fact that the information is kept confidential from the public. The case has been consolidated with another challenge to California s law by the Thomas More Law Center, a  Christian Right litigation group. ....
