Honoring Hank Aaron's Negro Leagues legacy in Indianapolis

Feb 26, 2021 / 07:21 PM EST
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH)  In 1952, a train ride northbound from Alabama changed baseball forever.
A salary of $200 a month brought Hank Aaron, the man who eventually broke Babe Ruth’s legendary home run record, to the Negro League’s Indianapolis Clowns.
“Our president, Bob Kendrick, was touring him around. He told Bob, ‘You know I may have had a ham sandwich, a change of clothes and a few dollars in my pocket that day, going to chase that dream to play baseball, ” said Ray Doswell of the Negro League Baseball Museum in Kansas City.
Today, Doswell’s razor-sharp storytelling depicts Aaron’s instant stardom with the Clowns, wowing crowds across the team’s barnstorming tours.   ....

Remembering Hank Aaron: A baseball giant whose legacy transcends sports

It was always Mister Aaron.
Mister is not an honorific used lightly. But for a man as revered as Henry Louis Aaron, it was a natural fit. Last month, after he was presented with the Hank Aaron Award by the man himself in a virtual ceremony, Freddie Freeman - who had undoubtedly met him many times in Atlanta - almost seemed in awe.
Thank you, Mr. Aaron, very much, a visibly moved Freeman said.
That exchange was the essence of Aaron, a baseball icon who died Friday at age 86. He was more than just a baseball player - he was a man so respected even the biggest stars found themselves at a loss for words around him. ....

Opinion | Hank Aaron Interview: 'I Recognized That I Had a Gift'

Jan. 23, 2021
I was born in Atlanta in 1960, and when the Braves moved to town from Milwaukee after the 1965 season, Hank Aaron became my all-seasons hero.
That didn’t seem unusual in my family, because my New Jersey-bred mother and Pennsylvania-raised father considered themselves civil rights foot soldiers. But it was anathema to my white classmates. I’ll never forget a day in spring 1966 when we picked the Braves players we wanted to be for a game of sandlot ball, and I picked Aaron. The other boys chose white players like Joe Torre, Denis Menke and Phil Niekro. When I came up to bat, the pitcher called out the N-word and tried to hit me with the ball, and everyone on the field laughed. ....
