10 May 2021
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro took to the streets of the nation’s capital, Brasilia, on Sunday for a motorcycle ride attended by hundreds in honor of Mother’s Day.
Bolsonaro, an avid biker, also told reporters the event was part of Brazil’s attempts, “little by little,” to declare victory against the Chinese coronavirus pandemic. Brazil has documented more deaths attributable to Chinese coronavirus than any other country but the United States – not including the estimated real death tolls in rogue states like China and Iran – and over 15 million cases and counting as of Monday.

What OECD Scrutiny Means For Anti-Corruption In Brazil
Law360 (April 27, 2021, 5:31 PM EDT) The disbandment of Brazil s Lava Jato task force and recent court decisions relating to former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and former Justice Minister Sergio Moro have raised the attention of the international community and, in particular, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
On March 15, Drago Kos, the chair of the OECD Working Group on Bribery, discussed the OECD s recent decision to create a standing monitoring subgroup focused on Brazil in an interview with the BBC News Brasil.[1] As part of the initiative, experts from three OECD member countries have been assigned to monitor anti-corruption efforts in Brazil. ....

The US government considers Joe Biden’s climate leaders’ summit for next week as Brazil’s last chance to show its environmental concern to restore American confidence and expand relations with the White House.
The blunt message was given by US Ambassador to Brazil Todd Chapman in a virtual private meeting on Sunday (11) with Brazilian politicians, economists, diplomats and businessmen.
Participants at the meeting, promoted by the parliamentary group, told Folha that Chapman was firm in saying that the environment will guide relations between Brazil and the United States, and that trade agreements between the two countries and the Brazil’s entry into the OECD, for example, depend on the latitude of the plan that the Jair Bolsonaro government will present to the summit organized by Biden, between April 22 and 23. ....

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil s new justice minister on Tuesday replaced the heads of the federal police and federal highway police with candidates backed by President Jair Bolsonaro, amid concerns the right-wing leader seeks more direct influence over law enforcement.
Named last week as part of Bolsonaro s largest Cabinet shakeup to date, Justice Minister Anderson Torres said on Twitter that Paulo Maiurino would replace federal police chief Rolando de Souza. Torres additionally named Silvinei Vasques to take the position of Eduardo Aggio, the head of Brazil s federal highway police.
Torres, himself a federal police officer, is close to the Bolsonaro family. Critics fear his appointment will allow the president to have undue control over federal police probes into his family and supporters. ....
