FLINT, MI - Flint residents gathered Sunday afternoon to commemorate seven years since the beginning of the Flint water crisis, reflecting over those lost, the city’s progress and what remains to be done.
A few dozen residents, some standing outside and some remaining in their cars, attended the April 25 event held at the old farmer’s market at 420 E. Boulevard Drive.
The water crisis was triggered in Flint nearly seven years ago when the city, while being run by state-appointed emergency managers, changed Flint’s water source to the Flint River. ....

FLINT, MI Seven years after the city’s water source was switched, triggering the Flint water crisis, the fallout continues to cast its pall.
While the city expects to close out three major water infrastructure projects related to the water crisis, including the final phase of a pipe replacement program, this year, other reminders of the man-made emergency linger with no clear end in sight.
Although a partial settlement of civil lawsuits filed on behalf of Flint residents could be approved later this year, the cases are continuing against defendants that have so far refused to settle their cases, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. ....

FLINT, MI Attorney Geoffrey Fieger says 25 clients with pending Flint water crisis lawsuits won’t be “strong-armed” into dropping their cases against McLaren Regional Medical Center and joining in a $641-million settlement with the hospital, the state of Michigan and others.
Speaking in a virtual hearing in federal court Wednesday, April 21, Feiger told U.S. District Court Judge Judith E. Levy and Genesee Circuit Court Judge Joseph J. Farah that all but one of his clients with Legionnaires’ disease claims don’t want to settle their cases under the terms of the agreement that’s received preliminary approval from the courts. ....

FLINT, MI Nearly five dozen objections to the Flint water crisis settlement have been logged in U.S. District Court this week, including two from former mayors Karen Weaver and Woodrow Stanley.
Stanley’s form-letter objection to the settlement was filed with the court Wednesday, April 21, and part of it says he plans to appear at a July 12 fairness hearing on the $641-million settlement, which has received preliminary approval in federal and state courts. ....

FLINT, MI Two law firms with clients in the Flint water crisis settlement are asking a federal judge to require the release detailed time and expense records used to justify payments from a $40-million common benefit fund to lawyers who performed work that led to the agreement.
Philadelphia attorney Mark Cuker, who represents approximately 1,300 Flint residents in federal water cases, and Chicago attorney Stephen F. Monroe filed a motion Monday, April 5, requesting that U.S. District Court Judge Judith E. Levy require law firms to provide the records, which they claim are “necessary to evaluate the amount of work that was truly done for common benefit” of Flint residents. ....
