Turkey warns Cyprus, Greece and Israel over underwater electricity cable deal

Turkey has formally protested against a new deal which plans to build an underwater electricity cable connecting Cyprus, Greece and Israel.
Ankara has argued that the planned route of the cable passes through Turkish territorial waters.
Turkish officials have presented diplomatic protest notes to Greek, Israeli and EU diplomats in Ankara, stating that the three countries needed to seek Turkey's permission.
Last week, government ministers reached an agreement to approve conduct feasibility studies to build a 2,000-megawatt undersea electricity cable at a maximum depth of 2,700 metres.
Cyprus, Greece and Israel also agreed to coordinate with their respective national electricity regulators on how best to proceed with the plans.

Photographer Captures Otherworldly Mayan Underwater Caves Formed Millions of Years Ago
These eerie yet magical photographs show part of a worshipped Mayan world—a glimpse into the world’s longest underwater cave systems.
Formed millions of years ago during the ice ages, these rare images show cenotes at the Rivera Maya in Mexico.
Photographer and diver Martin Broen, from New York, captured these incredible scenes when diving in more than 60 different caves located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Describing it like floating through a different planet, the natural swimming holes were formed by the collapse of porous limestone bedrock, leaving a secret world of groundwater pools.

Finding the Lost City of Heracleion: Encountering Myth Under the Waves

In 1992, IEASM began mapping the area around the port of Alexandria and in 1996 they extended their research to include Aboukir Bay, tasked by the Egyptian government to discover Canopus, Thonis and Heracleion, all believed to have been reclaimed by the Mediterranean Sea. This research allowed them to understand the topography and circumstances that caused submersion of the area over time. The team used information from historical texts to establish the areas of primary interest. The survey of Aboukir Bay covered a research area of 11 by 15 kilometers (6.8 x 9.3 miles).
Beginning in 1996, the mapping of the Aboukir Bay took years. In 1999 they discovered Canopus, and in 2000 they discovered Heracleion. The site of the sunken city of Heracleion remained hidden in the Bay of Aboukir for so long because the remains of the ancient city are covered with sediment. The upper layer of the sea floor is made up of sand and silt deposited as it exits the River Nile . The team from IEASM was able to locate remains by creating detailed magnetic maps, which provided the evidence needed to finally pinpoint the location of Heracleion.

A Gun With Gills: Russia's APS Spetsnaz Can Kill Underwater

A true underwater weapon.
Here's What You Need to Remember: The APS is an older design likely out of production, and Russia is reportedly seeking a replacement weapon. Meanwhile, the United States has never fielded an underwater assault rifle. This difference in priorities is a curious mismatch for two countries that maintain large numbers of SEALs/Spetsnaz/frogmen.
The widespread use of combat divers, more commonly known as frogmen, led to the inevitable question: how do frogmen from opposing sides kill each other when they meet underwater? In response, during the 1970s the Soviet Union developed an underwater assault rifle, the APS, that is still used by Russia today. The unusual-looking weapon is so uniquely suited to fighting under the surface of the waves it rapidly degrades if used on land.
