Study shows how collective behavior of bacterial colonies may contribute to antibiotic resistance

Study shows how collective behavior of bacterial colonies may contribute to antibiotic resistance
The bacterial equivalent of a traffic jam causes multilayered biofilms to form in the presence of antibiotics, shows a study published today in
eLife.
The study reveals how the collective behavior of bacterial colonies may contribute to the emergence of antibiotic resistance. These insights could pave the way to new approaches for treating bacterial infections that help thwart the emergence of resistance.
Bacteria can acquire resistance to antibiotics through genetic mutations. But they can also defend themselves via collective behaviors such as joining together in a biofilm - a thin, slimy film made up of many bacteria that is less susceptible to antibiotics. ....

Study shows evidence-based interventions can improve infant brain health

Study shows evidence-based interventions can improve infant brain health
In the world of neurodevelopment, one thing is clear: the earlier the intervention the better. Infancy is a critical time in brain development, and neuroscientists are increasingly identifying factors that can negatively impact cognition and ones that can improve cognition early in life.
At the annual meeting of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society (CNS), researchers from the University of Minnesota are presenting new work on two early interventions: one on the potential use of engineered gut microbes for antibiotic-exposed infants and another on a choline supplement to treat infants exposed prenatally to alcohol. ....

US Study Finds Antibiotic Overuse In COVID-19 Patients

US Study Finds Antibiotic Overuse In COVID-19 Patients
Study raises widespread concern about unnecessary use of antibiotics during pandemic.
Antibiotics have been overused to treat COVID-19 patients, a study in the US found, raising widespread concern about unnecessary antibiotic use during the pandemic.
According to the study by non-profit organization the Pew Charitable Trusts, more than half, 52%, of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the US received antibiotics during the first six months of the pandemic.
The more antibiotics are used, the faster antibiotic-resistant bacteria evolve to resist them, causing superbugs bacteria that are extremely difficult or impossible to treat with existing drugs, a statement by the organization said on Wednesday. ....
