UNL 'Strive to Thrive' program gives 10K to local nonprofits

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Each semester students enrolled in MNGT 411 within the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business, take part in Strive to Thrive.
The program allows students to learn about the community and its needs. The students then develop funding priorities in the form of a mission statement. They then select 25 local nonprofits whose work aligns with that mission statement. Through visitations and research, groups share their findings with the class. Two nonprofits are then chosen to receive a $5,000 grant.
On Wednesday, the class held a virtual award ceremony to announce the winners. Visionary Youth and South of Downtown Community Development Organization were the winners. ....

Sheldon art exhibition aims to educate on housing disparities

The Sheldon Museum of Art is featuring an exhibition until July 3 that focuses on the lesser-known consequences of discrimination within the United States.Â
The exhibition, âBarriers and Disparities: Housing in Americaâ utilizes a blend of photographs and artistic mediums to honestly and accurately show the inequalities in housing that has plagued the U.S. for centuries. The Sheldon has partnered with various civic organizations to shed light on the issue of housing inequality throughout the decades with installations like black and white photos of middle class suburban families around a dinner table and stark canvas prints of dilapidated urban living.Â ....

The head of Nebraskaâs Department of Environment and Energy told state lawmakers Thursday his agency has used all the tools available to it in trying to gain compliance from a troubled ethanol plant near Mead.
Since 2015, inspectors have conducted 77 site visits of AltEn, which used seeds treated with pesticides to produce ethanol instead of corn like most plants, Director Jim Macy told the Legislatureâs Natural Resources Committee during an hourlong briefing.
Three dozen of those inspections of the facility have occurred since Jan. 1 of this year, Macy said, as the frequency of problems has increased, necessitating a series of noncompliance letters, violation notices and administrative orders against the company. ....
