PUBLIC backing for the Welsh Government’s approach to handling Covid-19 helped Labour to hold onto its Senedd seat in Wrexham, according to the winning candidate.
Lesley Griffiths was today (Friday 7 May) elected to serve the constituency in the Welsh Parliament for a fourth successive term after beating Conservative Jeremy Kent by 1,350 votes.
The result came despite suggestions in the build-up to Thursday’s polling day that the Tories could be about to repeat the shock victory they pulled off in the area at the 2019 general election.
Both parties fought a hard campaign in Wrexham with Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak visiting in support of Mr Kent. ....

Labour holds on to Senedd seat in Wrexham as Lesley Griffiths wins

Government minister Lesley Griffiths won the constituency by 1,350 votes, beating Tory candidate Jeremy Kent.
It meant Labour was able to avoid a repeat of the 2019 general election, where the Conservatives pulled off a historic victory in the area.

Wrexham was again a hotly contested seat in the Welsh Parliament with both Prime Minister Boris Johnson and UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer visiting the town on the campaign trail in the last few weeks.

THE level of “excitement” for independence in North East Wales could see more voters backing Plaid Cymru, the party’s leader has claimed.
Adam Price said Plaid Cymru would hold an independence referendum in the first five year term if elected to govern following tomorrow’s (Thursday, May 6) Senedd elections.
One recent opinion poll put support for Welsh independence as high as 39 per cent, with Wrexham selected as the next location for an independence rally once large gatherings are permitted. ....

BORIS Johnson has dismissed the suggestion that allegations over his conduct could harm his party’s chances of making gains in the Senedd elections.
The Prime Minister was speaking during a visit to a factory in Wrexham, which was foreshadowed by claims he said he would rather have “bodies pile high in their thousands” than implement a third coronavirus lockdown.
He described the allegations as “total, total rubbish” after details of a discussion, which was said to have been held in Downing Street in the autumn, were reported by the Daily Mail. ....
