Citizens, activists demand release of DSA case accused Jhumon Das

Eminent citizens and activists on Friday demanded unconditional release of Jhumon Das, a youth arrested over two and a half month ago in a case under Digital Security Act with Shalla police station in Sunamganj allegedly for a facebook post against a Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh.
The facebook post on March 16 allegedly led to the mayhem in Noagaon village of Shalla upazila on March 17, which saw about 90 Hindu houses vandalised and looted. Jhumon was arrested later.
The citizens and activists in a statement on Friday said that Jhumon was in jail for 80 days and his bail prayers were denied repeatedly. ....

The State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh Shahriar Alam has said that the recently published report of the US government on religious freedom does not reflect the ground reality in the country. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of Bangladesh after a meeting between US ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R. Miller and the state Minister Shahriar Alam in Dhaka on Monday, the minister said that the government is making its best efforts to ensure communal harmony and religious non-discrimination in the country. He cited the Vested Property Return (Amendment) act 2011 and Chittagong Hill Tracts peace treaty of 1997 as examples of the steps the government has taken in this direction. Although constitutions of South and Southeast Asian countries provide for equality of faiths, governments do not always protect the rights of minority groups, the U.S. State Department said in its 2020 International Religious Freedom Report released on Wednesday.
The American commitment to defending freedom of religion and belief goes back centuries – and continues today – Secretary of State Antony Blinken said as he announced the publication of the 2,397-page document covering 200 countries and territories.
