Novel marker identifies cells that generate new neurons throughout life

Novel marker identifies cells that generate new neurons throughout life
The mammalian center for learning and memory, known as the hippocampus, has a remarkable capacity to generate new neurons throughout life. Newborn neurons originate from neural stem cells (NSCs) and are crucial for forming neural circuits required for learning and memory, and mood control.
“During aging, the number of NSCs declines, leading to decreased neurogenesis and age-associated cognitive decline, anxiety and depression,” said Dr. Mirjana Maletić-Savatić, associate professor of pediatrics-neurology at Baylor College of Medicine and investigator at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children’s Hospital. “Identifying the core molecular machinery responsible for NSC preservation is of fundamental importance if we are to use neurogenesis to halt or reverse hippocampal age-related conditions.” ....

Hypoxia signaling pathway could lead to COVID-19 treatments

Hypoxia signaling pathway could lead to COVID-19 treatments
Researchers in Spain have demonstrated that studying the hypoxia signaling pathway could provide opportunities for treating coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
The team conducted a study showing that hypoxic (oxygen-deficient) conditions reduced the expression of host cell receptors for the causative agent – severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).
Hypoxic conditions reduced expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) – the primary host cell receptor required for viral attachment and entry. They also decreased the expression of heparan sulfate (HS), another receptor known to be required for SARS-CoV-2 attachment.
The team – from the Basque Research and Technology Alliance in Derio and the Basque Foundation for Science in Bilbao also showed that hypoxia decreased HS levels through reduced expression of the main HS-containing proteoglycans (HSPGs) – syndecan-1 and synde ....

International research project investigates photosensitive carbon nanoparticles

 E-Mail
An international team of researchers, including researchers from Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) headed by Prof. Dr. Dirk M. Guldi have now managed to identify the fundamental problems relating to the photophysics and photochemistry of carbon nanocolloids (CNC), and ascertain possible approaches for research into these readily available, non-toxic and adaptable nanomaterials.
Light is not only the primary source of energy for life on Earth, it is also hugely important for a number of technical applications. Nanomaterials such as carbon nanocolloids (CNC) which can be used to tailor light-material interactions will have an important role to play in the technology of the future. As a sustainable product, they will help to avoid toxic waste and excessive consumption of resources. However, their range of application has been rather limited to date as their heterogenity hindered researchers in their attempts to find a uniform way of describing ....
