(Bloomberg Opinion) Jane Goodall, renowned conservationist and winner of this year’s Templeton Prize, has been a pioneer when it comes to respecting nature and animals. Has the pandemic changed her perspective at all? Goodall joined me for a live interview about the lessons that the animal kingdom can teach us about resilience. Here is a lightly edited transcript of our exchange.

Bloomberg: China is losing the soft war but could win the hard one

Cold War, Hard and Soft
A cold war has hard and soft components, like an egg or the SAT. Last night the Oscars were a stark reminder the U.S. is winning the soft-power part of the war. The hard part could be a much different story.
“Nomadland,” a very good, very depressing movie about premature retirees living in vans, won best picture. Its director, Chloé Zhao, a Chinese national, won best director. (Frances McDormand, a national treasure, won best actress for her part in the movie. Also, if you didn’t find the movie quite depressing enough, please read Jessica Bruder’s very good book.)  ....

Feb 6, 2021
A new year is well underway, but many of us are exactly where we were last March: working from home. Most people enjoy that, the data show, finding that it reduces stress and increases productivity. But what about the vocal minority who are truly miserable?
Some form of location flexibility is probably here to stay. So it’s worth the effort to find a way to work from home that you don’t hate. That starts with figuring out what exactly you hate about it.
First, consider whether it’s working from home that bothers you, or actually your job. If you felt miserable when you were going into the office every day, you probably didn’t tell yourself, “Man, I really hate this building.” When the problem is the work itself, you have bigger career questions to answer. ....

A Jassy success formula other leaders can follow

A Jassy success formula other leaders can follow

Tribune News Service
Andy Jassy, Amazon’s incoming CEO, has a conference room nicknamed the Chop. As Business Insider puts it in a profile of Jassy, “The Chop is where ideas, and sometimes employees, go to get chopped down to size.”
Despite the alarming name, I’m not sure Jassy’s meeting management style is anything to be feared. In fact, other leaders could learn something from it.
The basic gist seems to be that if you’re going to be meeting with the boss, you’d best be prepared. To this end, employees prepare memos ahead of time instead of trying to wing it. Most of the meeting is spent discussing the contents of the memo, so a lot of preparation goes into it. ....
