The attempt to eliminate the species, which is ranked among the 100 worst invasives worldwide, in the lagoon was nearing success until 2014, when the population exploded by a magnitude of 30. The explanation? Scientists had focused on taking the adult crabs, but because they are cannibalistic and consume their young, their absence inadvertently allowed the population to proliferate.
“A failure in science often leads to unexpected directions,” said Dr. Ted Grosholz, a professor and ecologist with the University of California, Davis. “We slapped our foreheads at the time, but with thought and understanding, it’s told us a lot about what we shouldn’t ....

We’ve officially been living in these dystopian times for an entire year, which is not exactly a fun anniversary to celebrate, but is hard to ignore nevertheless. We’ve gotten used to wearing masks everywhere we go, staying six feet apart from pretty much everyone, and may never wear actual pants again. Still, things are slowly starting to get back to “normal.” As of early March, we can even eat indoors, visit museums, and go back to the gym, a thing we likely all need to do if we ever want to fit into March 2020’s jeans again. We can also do all of this fun stuff, a lot of which is outside in case you’re still holding off on the whole indoors thing. We’ve got you and luckily, so does SF’s very mild weather. ....

Like many good stories of turning a passion into a profession, Gail Coppinger and Scott Woodson started out in a garage. They were brewing beer, learning the ins and outs of turning grain into liquor and falling in love with the craft the art, the science and the smell. ....
