(Tainan Tourism and Travel Bureau photo) TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The passenger ship Natchan Rera on April 21 began to ply the route between Tainan’s Anping Harbor and the outlying island county of Penghu three days a week, according to a press release from the city’s Tourism and Travel Bureau. Penghu, an archipelago made up of 97 islands, is located in the middle of the Taiwan Strait.

In a press release, the bureau suggested the Tonghua Trail in Waipu District, Dongshih Forest Garden, and Dongshi Hakka Cultural Park. It said the tung trees on both sides of the Tunghua Trail, which follows the course of an irrigation ditch in Waipu, start to flower in April or May every year. The trail has good views, including a scenic lookout where people can watch Taiwan High Speed Rail trains whiz past.

The Agra Development Authority (ADA) has passed a resolution to effect a steep hike in ticket rates, a move that has been widely opposed by the hospitality industry which is already in the dumps due the pandemic Covid-19 that forced closure of the Taj for more than 180 days and suspension of international flights.

Taichung Tourism and Travel Bureau Director Lin Hsiao-chi (林筱淇) said in a press release that due to pandemic restrictions on international travel, many Taiwanese have turned to hiking. The Seven Heroes of Guguan, a group of well-known, mid-size mountains in Taichung's Guguan area, have become top choices for hikers in central Taiwan, he added. Lin pointed out that in 2020, 1,300 people made it to all seven summits, while over 700 people managed three.
