Republican lawmakers expand free-speech, diversity training concerns at University of Iowa


Disgruntled Republican lawmakers who last month pummeled the University of Iowa College of Dentistry with questions about its treatment of a conservative student leveled more questions and criticism Tuesday at UI officials.
“I believe you have a systemic problem that needs to be addressed,” Rep. Steve Holt, R-Denison, told UI Dental College Dean David Johnsen, Provost Kevin Kregel and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Executive Officer Liz Tovar at a government oversight committee hearing.
“Since your last appearance before this committee, I’ve received numerous pieces of correspondence, some from students, who want to share their own horror story about the cancel culture they’re experiencing at your school and what they see as the faculty and staff’s participation in it,” Holt said. “I’ve also received letters from dentists disgusted that politics have been interjected into the school.” ....

The Conservative Political Action Conference began Friday with a session called “Why the Left Hates the Bill of Rights … and We Love It.”
The four-day annual gathering of Republican politicians and activists started Thursday in Orlando, Florida. CPAC’s agenda included five events on free speech, including a Friday speech by U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, called “Bill of Rights, Liberty, and Cancel Culture.” ....

At 96, Margaret DeWolfe Clepper entered into rest February 17, 2021. Born at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation Hospital, Margaret grew up during the Great Depression near Gordon, Nebraska on a cattle ranch with 10 siblings and her parents, Harry B. and Cora Sears Shields DeWolf. At 20, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War 2 achieving the rank of Pharmacist’s Mate 3rd Class while serving as a dental hygienist and assisting in the forensic dental identification of servicemen.
During her time at NAS Glenview she met the love of her life, James A. Clepper, a naval officer from Wheeler, Texas. On Christmas Eve, 1944 Margaret waited in line at the Chicago USO for tickets when Jim spotted, “The most beautiful girl I’d ever seen.”  They married in Hot Springs, South Dakota in the spring of 1946 when he returned from duty in the Pacific. The devoted couple were blessed with over 75 years together.   ....
