Report highlights civil legal problems facing Granite Staters


A new study of civil legal needs in New Hampshire assesses the kinds of civil legal problems faced by Granite Staters and their experiences seeking low and no cost legal help. The civil legal needs assessment was sponsored by the New Hampshire Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission.
“The Judicial Branch was pleased to partner with other funders, the Commission, and the civil legal aid programs to make this needs assessment possible,” said Associate Justice James Bassett of the New Hampshire Supreme Court. “It will help improve our understanding of the kinds of civil legal needs experienced by low-income Granite Staters and the obstacles they confront when seeking affordable legal help.” ....

Study assesses New Hampshire’s legal aid needs

The New Hampshire Access to Justice Commission released its 2021 report on the civil legal needs of Granite Staters and its findings reaffirm what was already known – poverty itself creates problems that require legal assistance. 
“Low-income people, older adults, and people with disabilities frequently experience multiple legal problems at once,” the report states. 
The New Hampshire Access to Justice Commission was created by the NH Supreme Court with the purpose of implementing changes to improve citizens access to the courts. One of the commission’s duties consists of identifying and assessing current and future needs for access to justice in civil matters. ....

With the 2020 election cycle now in the rear view mirror and the early moves underway for the 2022 midterms, a new poll suggests two out of five New Hampshire voters view the job Sen. Maggie Hassan is doing in Washington favorably.
Hassan, the Newfields Democrat and former two-term governor who’s running next year for a second six-year term representing New Hampshire in the U.S. Senate, was the headline in a University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll released on Friday. ....
