Dr. John F. Potter.
John F. Potter, a surgical oncologist and longtime medical school professor who was the founding director of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, died June 29 at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, where he worked and taught for decades. He was 95.
The cause was pneumonitis, said his daughter Tanya Potter Adler.
Dr. Potter began his medical studies at Georgetown shortly after World War II and, except for brief periods, was associated with the university for more than 60 years.
In 1970, he became the first director of Georgetown’s cancer center, which was later named for football coach Vince Lombardi, who died that year of colorectal cancer. Dr. Potter was among the physicians treating Lombardi at Georgetown University Hospital. ....

Southeastern's Sustainability Center wins national award – The Lion's Roar

The university was one of only five postsecondary institutions to be recognized.
Graduate assistant Gina Howell and manager Alejandro Martinez wrote a 20-page proposal for the two-month process. The ceremony will take place in Washington D.C. on Sept. 17.
One of the main causes they advocate for is recycling. Right now, there are about 75 green recycling bins located across campus. They accept paper, plastic, metal cans and cardboard, but they do not accept glass, plastic bags, styrofoam or electronics.
Another item often seen across campus that they contributed toward is the 98 water bottle filling stations. The Elkay water filters are made with activated carbon and can purify up to 2000 gallons before needing to be replaced.  ....

Student Government Association announces its first all-Black 'Big Three' – The Lion's Roar

The Student Government Association has announced its first all-Black executive officers from its recent elections.
The cabinet positions are Kelsey Staes, who is chief justice, Ke’Ron Jackson who will serve as vice president and incumbent L’Oreal Williams for president, who will be serving her second term.
Although Spring 2021 has been a challenging semester, the members overcome the challenges of campaigning during a pandemic. For them, the election remained an exciting and rewarding experience.
“My first reaction to winning the election for chief justice was being shocked. I cried when I found out about the run-off. When it was announced that I had officially won I was just in awe for a few minutes because it was real. I was excited, and it just felt rewarding!” Staes said.  ....

Sacred Heart University Rally Affirms Support for LGBTQ+ Community
Written by Sacred Heart University
Sacred Heart University affirmed its support for the LGBTQ+ community with an event, “As You Are,” following the Vatican’s recent decision that the Catholic Church will not bless same-sex unions.
The celebration of LGBTQ+ students, faculty and staff took place March 29 at SHU’s Fairfield campus, with music from local singer Erick Sanchez and remarks by University President John J. Petillo and a host of others.
While the Vatican’s decision on same-sex marriages disappointed the LGBTQ+ community and its allies, Sacred Heart leaders say the University remains steadfast in its support of LGBTQ+ individuals. “Sacred Heart is a community of faith, which will continue to welcome and respect each and every person. Driven by our Christian mission, we will continue to be a community of welcome and respect. Together, and only together, can we grow in th ....
