Jyoti Fernandes is an agroecological farmer based in Dorset and coordinates the policy, lobbying and campaigning work of the Landworkers Alliance, a British small-farmers union
My 17-hectare farm has rich grassland where I keep a small, traditional dairy herd, sheep under orchards, coppiced woodland and a market garden where we grow more than 40 varieties of fruit and vegetable. I started the farm with my family largely because we wanted healthy food and to supply fresh food to our local community.
Agroecology is farming that works with nature. It describes any farming system that doesn’t use agro-toxins, instead working with natural processes to produce diverse, nutritious food that’s distributed fairly. The goal of agroecology is to create a food and farm ....

The world is at a critical moment to deliver on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said on Wednesday, during a virtual discussion with European Parliament Vice-President Heidi Hautala.
Multilateral engagement is key to responding to the pandemic and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the deputy chief highlighted the importance of the UN’s strategic partnership with the EU.

Five things the world is saying about ecosystem restoration

Five things the world is saying about ecosystem restoration
The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration – set to launch during World Environment Day on 5 June – aims to rally citizens, governments and corporations around one common goal: preventing, halting and reversing the destruction of natural spaces.
The drive comes as experts warn that ecosystems around the world are facing collapse. The planet is losing 4.7 million hectares of forests every year – an area larger than Denmark – and over the past century, half of the globe’s wetlands have been drained.
“The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration’s mission is as important as it is daunting,” says Tim Christophersen, coordinator of the UN Decade with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). ....

EU urged to punish UK for 'breaking' Brexit deal – Italy furious at export 'restrictions' | UK | News

Its complaints relate to what it calls the UK’s “very restrictive” anti-Xylella regulations.
These were announced by the government in February and are aimed at stopping Xylella - a bacteria which causes disease in a wide range of plants and trees - from spreading to the UK.
Xylella is rampant across Europe, including in Italy, but is so far not known in the UK.
At the time, the Government said it aimed to improve “our plant biosecurity in response to known threats, protecting businesses, society and the environment”.

The restrictions, introduced this month, meant countries where the bacteria was known to exist would face “more stringent requirements”. ....

How global sustainable development will affect forests

 E-Mail
Global targets to improve the welfare of people across the planet will have mixed impacts on the world s forests, according to new research.
The United Nations 17 key areas for global development - known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - range from tackling poverty, hunger and sanitation to promoting clean energy, economic growth and reducing inequality.
Many of these goals, such as improved peace and justice, good health and wellbeing, and quality education, will have a positive impact on the Earth s natural forests.
But others, including creating new roads, industry and infrastructure, are likely to have detrimental consequences.
The research, led by the University of Leeds, reviewed a wide range of existing academic papers into the UN s global goals. ....
