By Cassidey Kavathas, News Editor
On the morning of March 1, the St. Bonaventure university campus paused as the news of President Dr. Dennis Deperro’s passing sat in everyone’s email inbox.
“I was sitting at my desk this morning when the news came from Dr. Zimmer and it was one of those days where I had just felt that something was off from the moment I woke up,” said Dean Whitcomb, the assistant director of admissions at the university. “I was in shock and deeply saddened to read the words on my screen.”
The news that the 21st president passed away after his battle with COVID-19 was delivered at 9:17 a.m. as students and faculty prepared for classes and work. DePerro was first admitted to a Syracuse hospital Dec. 29 after testing positive for COVID-19 on Christmas Eve. He was placed on a ventilator midJanuary. DePerro died at 4:30 a.m. on March 1, at the age of 62. ....

DePerro, St. Bonaventure’s 21st president, was 62.
St. Bonaventure announced DePerro’s death with a statement on the university’s website.

Dropping mandates, hiking for stress: News from around our 50 states

From USA TODAY Network and wire reports
Alabama
Montgomery: Hospitals support an extension of a statewide face mask order, at least until more people become vaccinated against COVID-19, the head of the Alabama Hospital Association said Monday. Gov. Kay Ivey is expected to announce this week whether she will extend the face covering mandate and other health orders that are set to expire Friday. A spokeswoman for the governor expressed optimism about state coronavirus numbers. “All along, Gov. Ivey has made clear that she prefers personal responsibility to government mandates. We are optimistic that our state is heading in the right direction, and we still have some work to be done,” Gina Maiola said Monday. Alabama, like much of the nation, has seen a significant drop in daily COVID-19 cases, but medical officials cautioned that the virus has not gone away, and uncertainty remains about the impact of emerging variants and upcoming events like spring break gatherings. ....
