'Unique opportunity': HS2 unearths history of medieval church | HS2

Last modified on Fri 7 May 2021 10.15 EDT
For 150 years, in a small, tree-lined corner of a Buckinghamshire field, a large pile of stones lay overgrown and almost forgotten. A thriving local parish church for almost 800 years, the little building of St Mary’s near Stoke Mandeville had gradually fallen out of use and been abandoned. By 1866 its crumbling walls were judged to be dangerous and it was pulled down, its rubble left to the grass and weeds.
The site of Old St Mary’s church is no longer silent. The ruins sit on the route of what will – most people in Buckinghamshire now reluctantly concede – become the HS2 rail link, and like dozens of other landscape features along the line’s 150-mile length, they are busily being excavated before the track’s construction. This week, HS2 archaeologists announced they had identified 3,000 burials in the churchyard that will be carefully exhumed and reburied elsewhere. ....

Stoke Mandeville's St Mary's Church is dug up by archaeologists

Archaeologists working to prepare for HS2 have begun unlocking almost 900 years of history.
The group of enthusiasts recently visited St Mary’s Church in Stoke Mandeville which was built in 1080AD, shortly after the Norman conquest that transformed Saxon England.
The construction of a new church closer to the centre of the village in the 1880s saw the building abandoned and falling into disrepair.

According to local accounts, a child was killed by falling masonry in the 1930s, and by 1966, the building was considered so dangerous that the Royal Engineers were drafted in to demolish it. ....

Wednesday briefing: Hearts and minds at stake in Hartlepool

Last modified on Wed 5 May 2021 01.48 EDT
Top story: Labour insiders warn of ‘huge trouble’
Hello, I’m Warren Murray, and the last thing I would want to do is waste your time – so here is what matters most.
Fewer than half of recent Labour voters in Hartlepool say they will back the party in Thursday’s crucial byelection, according to internal data based on the canvassing of more than 10,000 people, leading activists to fear a historic Conservative victory. Voters across England, Scotland and Wales will go to the polls tomorrow on what has been dubbed “Super Thursday”, in the biggest set of local and devolved parliament elections since 1973. It is the first byelection since Boris Johnson’s landslide victory in December 2019, and is seen as a test of Labour’s appeal to its heartlands just over a year after Keir Starmer became leader with a pledge to rebuild the “red wall”. ....

HS2 workers to exhume 3,000 bodies in Buckinghamshire churchyard

The exhumation is not the first during the development of the controversial rail link. In 2017 an estimated 60,000 bodies were disinterred from a former burial site at Euston station. The bodies were later reburied at Brookwood cemetery in Surrey.
The ancient church was renovated in the 13th, 14th and 17th centuries. It played a central role in the community and was subject to a variety of extensions and the construction of a brick bell tower.
The old church was abandoned and fell into disrepair following the construction of a new church closer to the centre of the village in the 1880s. In 1966 the building was considered so dangerous that the Royal Engineers were drafted in to demolish it. ....

Pretty coastal walk from Walmer to Deal

Our walk begins in Upper Walmer, an inland village where, if you look closely, you can still get a sense of its medieval origins.
Peek over the wall of Old St Mary’s church, and you’ll see the romantic stone and flint remains of Walmer Court. Built in the 12th century, this was once the manor house – the beating heart of the village – which owned and controlled the land and the villagers lives.
Unlike its flashier neighbour Deal, today, Upper Walmer feels out of the way, off the beaten track even. But this is no accident.
Thanks to its proximity to the coast, Walmer’s fate has long been linked to the sea. From at least the 18th century, a spit of land grew northwards from Walmer to Deal. ....
