Motherland: Sparkling wine o'clock wit from Sharon Horgan

It’s a little over a week since Anna Maxwell Martin’s Patricia Carmichael was fixing her laser glare at Ted Hastings on Line of Duty. So a degree of readjustment is required – on her part and ours – as the actress returns as embattled mum Julia in series three of Sharon Horgan’s Motherland (BBC Two, 9pm).
Motherland’s genius idea is to take the soap opera that is the daily gauntlet run at the school gates and expand it into a sit-com. And just as everybody is a bent copper on Line of Duty here almost every character is a fed-up mother (with one or two novelty stay-at-home dads).

TV tonight: more excruciating trials of middle-class motherhood

Motherland
9pm, BBC Two
Fresh from her star turn as the menacing Patricia Carmichael in Line of Duty, Anna Maxwell-Martin dons an altogether more empathetic guise as harried working mother Julia for the third season of the hit sitcom about the trials of middle-class motherhood. Finding herself cut off from the other mums, Julia tries to win back their favour by hosting a nit treatment party. While the combs are out, Amanda (Lucy Punch) gossips about Kevin’s potential divorce and Liz (Diane Morgan) waits to hear back about a job.
Ammar Kalia
7.30pm, BBC Two
Sara Cox is the perfect fantasy book club host, kicking off this new series with guests Oti Mabuse, Mel Giedroyc, Rick Edwards and Griff Rhys-Jones. Their recent “big hitter” up for discussion is The Vanishing Half by Britt Bennett, and there’s a new recommendation to add to the neglected bedside table pile.

Alison Rowat's TV preview: Fargo, Gods of Snooker, Motherland

AFTER a dearth of drama during the pandemic viewers can feel spoiled this week with at least two offerings sure to be in the running for awards and acclaim when the time comes.
Fargo (Channel 4, Sunday, 10pm) returns to the badlands of Kansas City for a 1950-set series. Noah Hawley’s whip-smart and delightfully cynical crime drama, now on its fourth outing, has distinguished itself down the years with big name, sometimes surprising, casting. This time, it is Chris Rock adding his name to a list that includes Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Ted Danson and Ewan McGregor.
The stand-up superstar plays Loy Cannon, part of a band of African-American gangsters who want to take the Italian-American mob on at their own game. Wonder how that works out. As added treats, also showing up are Jessie Buckley (Wild Rose), Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore), Ben Whishaw (voice of Paddington) and Timothy Olyphant (Justified).

Motherland season 3 review | A punchy pandemic parody

5.0 out of 5 star rating
It’s been almost two years since BBC Two gave us a full series of Motherland and while the Christmas special provided that much-needed shot of cynical wit at the end of last year, finally the school-gate sitcom is back for a third term – and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

I devoured all five episodes of series three in one-sitting, speeding through the half-hour episodes with the hectic energy of Anna Maxwell Martin’s Julia, who is just as chaotic, unorganised and exhausted as she’s been in the last two series – except this time she’s also looking after her ill mum Marion. A satirical portrayal of middle-class West London mums and the politics of PTA fundraisers, school trips and kids’ birthday parties, Motherland is back on top form despite the hiatus, with its fast-paced episodes, jam-packed with sharp take-downs, proving a welcome distraction from the ongoing pandemic.

Anna Maxwell Martin as Julia
BBC
Who is Julia? Julia is a working mother, struggling to juggle her job and childcare now that her mother Marion, who suffered a health scare last series, has moved in. Still trying to keep up with the Alpha Mums, school PTA events and her mother’s hospital appointments, Julia finds herself somewhat distracted by new builder Garry.

JAN MOIR: It's not just Line Of Duty that lost the plot

Line Of Duty is over, but it is not over. Series six might have ended but the nation fumes on, blazing away in a bonfire of plot-point furies.
When it was revealed that it was dimbulb Buckells who was the fourth man, there were howls of outrage. Viewers felt emotionally swindled; cheated of their investment of time and passion in a television series that began nine long years ago. But what did they want?
Many would not have been happy unless Chief Superintendent Patricia Carmichael had been chased around the Palisades Shopping Centre by a brace of helicopter gunships while Fleming ran off with Davidson to live and love for ever in Chocolate Box Cottage in the beautiful village of Witness Protection.

As Britain’s arts return, we need to abandon our forgiving standards and appetite for trash, and bring some rigour back to the conversation
The picture of disappointment: Grayson Perry and his Art Club became a pandemic hit

During the past year, the damage to the arts has been greater than at any other time in recent history. We have seen vast job losses at institutions such as the National Theatre; all major events cancelled; freelancers in every discipline consigned to a life on the breadline. Our cultural life has been put on hiatus.
