MEXICO CITY – Mexico and the United States find themselves on the cusp of an unusual power transition in Washington, one that has put the future of the bilateral relationship in doubt. Mexico has been forced to navigate four years of the most anti-Mexican administration in recent memory, and Joe Biden’s inauguration thus represents a unique opportunity for both countries to reset their relationship and approach issues such as trade, immigration and security from a new perspective, burying the dismal legacy of Donald Trump. In a recent press conference, Mexico’s president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) derided the Mérida Initiative – the country’s security cooperation framework with the US – for adopting a militarised approach to organised crime instead of focusing on the development and wellbeing of the Mexican people. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs followed this up by announcing that the Mérida Initiative had officially ended, as it was no longer meeting Mexico’s needs.
The relationship has been fraught with mutual distrust, culminating in the recent arrest and the subsequent release of former Mexican Secretary of Defence General Salvador Cienfuegos, accused of high-level corruption by US authorities. However, despite the differences, it has never been more important for US-Mexico security cooperation to reach for the defibrillator, and finding common ground could be easier than it might initially seem. ....

After weeks of public patience regarding the results of the U.S. presidential election, Mexico’s president congratulated President-Elect Joe Biden Tuesday.
On Monday night, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) sent a letter to Biden congratulating and expressing goodwill. AMLO asked for the U.S. to respect Mexico’s rule of law, sovereignty, and a commitment non-intervention.
