My Farming Week: Wesley Hatton, Ballyhyland, Caim, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford

SHARING OPTIONS:
Wesley Hatton from Kiltealy, Co Wexford with his son Ryan, niece Nikita and nephew Reece and sister Louise and newborn lambs. \ Patrick Browne
The farm: “I was farming in partnership with my father Harry up until February of last year when he passed away. I am farming on my own here now. The farm is on Clonroche-type soil, it’s free draining soil, so we are lucky enough we can get out on land early. I sow 200 acres of tillage and this year I lambed down 210 ewes.”
A helping hand: ”The ewes are Suffolk-cross. They scanned in at 1.8 this year and lambed very well, I didn’t incur many losses. It was due to my sister Louise, son Ryan, niece Nikita and nephew Rhys helping me and minding all the lambs. There was no hungry lamb in the place thanks to them! Ryan’s nanny Ann even had the dinner ready for us every day, which was as important as everything else.” ....

March 11, 2021 10:17 am
College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprises (CAFRE) crops advisors are highlighting the impact that a wet autumn, in which winter cereals were sown over an extended period, has resulted in crops which now range from strong and well-developed to thin and backward.
High winter rainfall has left soil nitrogen (N) levels low – therefore, early N is a priority to kick-start them back into life.
Winter barley requires at least one third of its total N during late tillering, before mid-March and winter wheat the same proportion before the end of March. For thin and struggling crops, sow N earlier to encourage tillering. ....

Saffroned Barley Recipe by The Daily Meal Contributors

1/2 Cup sliced almonds
2 Tablespoons fresh minced parsley
1/4 Teaspoon fine sea salt
Directions
Step 1: In a small bowl, mix the golden and black raisins. Add 1/2 cup orange juice or tea and allow the raisins to soak in a warm place, like by the stove, while you prepare the recipe. Or, place the raisins and liquid in a small pot and simmer over medium for two minutes. This will help to plump and flavor them.
Step 2: To a large pot, add 2 cups uncooked pearl barley and 1 tablespoon olive oil. Toast over medium heat for 5 minutes; the barley will become fragrant as it toasts. ....
