Annette Gordon-Reed Explores the Tangled Meaning of Juneteenth

In the historic Black neighborhood where I grew up in Dallas, a parade would roll off the lot of New Mount Zion Baptist Church on June 19, or the Saturday closest to it, and wend its way through a community where many of the streets were named for institutions and people central to Black history: Oberlin and Ebony. Bellafonte and Dandridge. Bunche and Campanella. Neighborhood celebrities entrepreneurs, student body presidents, and original homeowners, or “pioneers,” as we called them would ride like homecoming kings and queens atop convertibles.
When the Juneteenth parade made it to Willowdell Park, we’d have dinner on the grounds, featuring barbecue, sometimes a fish fry, and Big Red “soda water.” There would be three-on-three basketball tournaments under the pavilion and, in recent years, performances of African drumming and Indigenous dance in the field near the creek. Homegrown success stories, such as former Cowboys cornerback Eve ....

About 250 San Antonio Businesses Closed During The Pandemic According To Commissioners

Texas Public Radio
Officials with the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce said many downtown members were among the Bexar County business closures.
Bexar County Commissioners voted Tuesday to grant $600,000 to 13 local chambers of commerce who lost business members or covered their business members dues during the pandemic.
Many businesses stopped paying membership fees to local chambers or closed due to the pandemic. The president and CEO of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, Richard Perez, said many downtown members were among the closures.
We have seen about 250 members cease to exist. Their business is closed and most of them permanently. So we were at 2,000 now we are at about 1,800, he said. ....

Landa Park trees, landmarks have a rich history of area

Colorful tree flowers and leaves of various shades of green welcome nature lovers into Gazebo Circle in Landa Park. Along the fast-moving crystal clear stream of Spring Run No. 3, arching branches of native Mexican buckeye trees explode with dark pink flowers.
Following an unusual and incredibly cold winter, one notices small shiny fresh green leaves emerging from almost bare stems as a welcome to Spring in Landa Park. Along this same winding path, on the other side of this stream, one has a good view of the beginning of the Texas Hill Country — wide strata of horizontal bands of limestone rising up to the street above and beyond. ....

Tried and tasted: best whiskies

Egan’s Vintage Grain
Originally founded in 1852 in Tullamore, County Offaly, Egan’s Irish Whiskey was resurrected in 2013 by members of the Egan family and today it has the fifth and sixth generation, Maurice and Jonathan Egan, continuing the traditions and legacy.
We tasted two varieties from the Egan’s collection: Fortitude and Vintage Grain. Fortitude, which is the first Irish single malt whiskey to be matured exclusively in Pedro Ximénez casks, is a full fruity number with sherry notes and dried fruit flavours.
Described as an “ideal introduction to Irish whiskey”, Egan’s Vintage Grain is a single grain whiskey which is aged in American oak bourbon barrels for a minimum of eight years. The Egan family recommend using Vintage Grain in cocktails, Irish coffee as well as being drunk neat.  ....
