2020 will be the year that upended the restaurant industry. It’s difficult to talk about the year in review when everything changed, when people and businesses suffered during the pandemic. In light of the challenging year for everyone in Los Angeles, we asked food writers and industry folks about restaurants they thought stepped up for their communities and stakeholders.

Post & Beam’s chef/owner John Cleveland and numerous South LA restaurants worked with Councilman Marqueece Harris Dawson to prepare meals for seniors from March until June. The program ended June 12, but Clevelend extended the program by fundraising within the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw community. I can’t think of another restaurant so commit ....

New L.A. women's restaurant group shows support with festival

“We all have capes on,” Kim Prince said . “I tell all these female restaurant owners, don’t tuck your capes in. Wear them out and let them fly.”
The owner of Hotville Chicken at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw mall is part of a new all-female Los Angeles organization called Regarding Her, or RE:Her. The group is creating a growing network of female chefs and restaurateurs to support one another with mentorship and resources. The newly formed 501(c)(3) has about 80 members, including All Day Baby, Akasha, Playa Provisions, Kismet, Porridge + Puffs, Socalo, Meals by Genet and Ronan. RE:Her plans to host a 10-day festival in January to coincide with the anniversary of the Women’s March on Jan. 21. ....

Shops at the Crenshaw mall weather pandemic ahead of sale

The Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza may be open, but it doesn’t much feel that way.

Gone is the classic mall background noise Top 40 music drowned out by people talking, walking, rustling shopping bags. Gone are the free weekly workouts and the book readings. The stores have signs in the windows noting that they are open with limited capacity, but more often than not there’s only a lone shopkeeper inside. ....

Latest bid to buy Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza may be dead | The Real Deal Los Angeles

Two months after developers appeared set to pay $110 million for the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza in South Los Angeles, a deal for the mall looks like it has fallen apart.
In October, LIVWRK and DFH Partners agreed to buy the struggling property from Capri Urban Investors. That came four months after CIM Group backed out of a $130 million purchase for a planned redevelopment of the sprawling shopping center.
Now, Capri apparently is scuttling the deal, according to a source close to the transaction. One of the community groups opposed to the purchase, Downtown Crenshaw, sent an email Tuesday night announcing it had prevented the acquisition, and declaring victory. ....
