Fire kills 3 in market near Rohingya camp in Bangladesh

COX S BAZAR, Bangladesh (AP) — A fire on Friday destroyed more than 20 shops in a makeshift market near a Rohingya refugee camp in southern Bangladesh, killing at least three people, police and witnesses said.
Local police chief Ahmed Sanjur Morshed said they recovered the bodies from the debris after it took firefighters several hours to bring the blaze under control. Several other people were injured.
The fire broke out early Friday when residents of the sprawling Kutupalong camp for Myanmar s Rohingya refugees were asleep.
Sayedul Mustafa, the owner of a shop, confirmed the dead were his staff.
“We had five workers who slept in the shop but three of them were missing. Then after the fire was put out with water, we found one body first, then all three. Two people survived by the grace of Allah,” said Aneesul Mustafa, a Rohingya refugee and the owner s relative. ....

Colleges around the country have been struggling under the shadow of the coronavirus, facing declining enrollment and major budget cuts. And students have mourned the loss of the traditional college experience, grappling with the disruption as campuses closed and many classes moved on line.
But while the pandemic’s effect on ordinary college life has been widely chronicled, a new survey took a closer look at the profound effect it has had on the highest-risk students. Many, it found, have faced challenges just to make ends meet, with nearly three in five struggling for access to housing and food. ....

Biden tells migrants to stay put. Central Americans hear a different message.

Apr 1, 2021
LA TECNICA, GUATEMALA – Maritza Hernandez arrived at this remote Guatemalan village exhausted, with two young kids in tow and more than a thousand miles left to travel. She was motivated by a simple if not entirely accurate story.
“I heard news they are letting children in,” said Hernandez, explaining she planned to cross the U.S. border in Texas and seek asylum.
The number of immigrant families apprehended by U.S. agents along the southern border nearly tripled in February from a month earlier to about 19,000 people. Hunger and poverty are spurring their flight. So is disinformation that has rocketed across social media and by word of mouth that the U.S. border is now wide open. ....

This booklet critically reviews the media and information literacy (MIL) education policies and practices in formal, informal, and non-formal settings in five Asian countries (Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand) and explores how MIL education could address emerging and pressing issues such as political extremism, false news, online harassment, and discrimination.
Published by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Bangkok, the booklet is designed to support Member States in formulating education policies and strategies on MIL that respond to the current MIL trends and challenges identified in the research. Scaling Up Public Health Interventions: Case Study of the Polio Immunization Program in Indonesia

The polio immunization program must be owned by local stakeholders and decision makers.
The frameworks for scaling up public health interventions - for transforming health research interventions into pathways towards achieving development goals - are diverse. Examples of elements of such frameworks include: leadership responsibility, packaging of new ideas, communication, social system strengthening, measurement and feedback, and knowledge management. This paper investigates the process, actors, and contexts of polio immunisation scaling up in Indonesia from 1988 to 2018.
The researchers carried out a quantitative survey of 323 actors involved in the polio programme at national and sub-national levels, followed by key informant interviews (KIIs) and a document review (to construct a timeline of the polio eradication programme, with milestones). All data were collected between June 2018 and March 2019. ....
