Songwriter Stephen Foster s antebellum ballad My Old Kentucky Home, the state song of Kentucky, has been sung by crowds at the Kentucky Derby almost every year since 1936. Last year, because of pandemic crowd restrictions and protests of the song s racism, track bugler Steve Buttleman intoned the melody in a somber performance shorn of the controversial words. Former Pitmarine Properties Are Part Of Pittsburgh River History

Two pieces of property acquired by the former Pitmarine Corporation owner have historic ties to the rivers and the Pittsburgh area.
The properties were listed for sale last month following the death of Capt. Graydon “Bub” Crain in July 2020 at age 86.
Crain, of Cranberry Township, Pa., was one of the founders of C&C Marine, which is now Campbell Transportation Company Inc. He was the middle son of Mason “Spike” Crain, who began Crain Bros. Inc., a well-known marine construction, towing and salvage firm. Crain left Crain Bros. in 1969 to partner with Tom Campbell to launch C&C Marine. He eventually started Pitmarine as his own venture and continued to operate it until his retirement several years ago. ....

Night of the Living Deadscript: “They are dead things…the flesh on their faces is rotting and oozing…their eyes bulge from deep sockets…their hair is long, and their clothing rotten and in tatters.” Another detailed a vivid description of the end of
Day of the Dead: “This is it, gore fans. The gross finale…the intestine tugger….Balthazar and his court get torn to shreds as the blues and the whites get their supper.” And there was also a note with Romero’s advice on how to get said intestines from the butcher: “All he needs is a little advanced notice as he only slaughters on certain days.” ....

Stamp collectors soon can grab a piece of Pittsburgh history with a new Forever Stamp honoring legendary playwright August Wilson.
The U.S. Postal Service will dedicate the stamp Jan. 28, the first day of its release, with a virtual ceremony on its Twitter and Facebook pages.
The stamp will be the 44th in the Postal Service’s Black Heritage series, which debuted in 1978 with a stamp featuring Harriet Tubman. The annual series features a wide variety of prominent Black Americans, including Martin Luther King Jr., Jackie Robinson and Ella Fitzgerald. ....
