Comics can be a heartless business. Yesterday's legends get discarded by shortsighted editors and publishers chasing hot fads. Even fans can take the greats for granted.
Recently, there was a discussion on Twitter where a clueless "fan" ridiculed some work done by Herb Trimpe near the end of his tenure at Marvel, in the 1990s. At the time, the hyper-muscular art styles made popular by young guns like Rob Liefeld
and Jim Lee were setting the pace for the comics industry, and with comics being the copycat business that it is, editors wanted more of the same. Dependable workhorses like Trimpe either had to adapt their art styles to the current aesthetic or lose work. Trimpe tried to do it with decidedly mixed results. The original post that started the discussion was a cheap shot that was thankfully rebuked by a number of top comics talent, including Evan Dorkin, who thoughtfully explained the impossible situation an artist like Trimpe found himself in during the latter part of his career.

Not All Robots is the next creator-owned project from writer Mark Russell. SC Comicon: How comic cons could work in the COVID era

The SC Comicon that took place last weekend in Greenville, South Carolina was the first major in-person convention in the area since before the pandemic. When I heard the show was happening, and having already been vaccinated, I flew up to Greenville to see it for myself. The largest con in the state, it's long had a great rep for being a talent-friendly show with a low-key vibe and is also known as a con where you can score some hard-to-find comics.
Robert Young, the organizer of the show, knew the decision to resume the show after canceling it in 2020 would very likely open him up to criticism, and he understood why. Even though vaccinations are rolling out at a rapid clip and more than half of American adults have gotten at least one vaccine shot, there is concern that vaccine hesitancy combined with pandemic fatigue could pose dangers in certain communities. Young knew that, but he also was aware that statistics showed the number of COVID cases in the Greenville area had been steadily declining since January.
