Training Program Assists People Of Color Running For Office In CT

Nearly 100 Connecticut residents from 28 communities received a certificate for completing Representation Matters, an intensive, free, and groundbreaking two-day training session aimed at providing the essential skills needed for more people of color to run for local public office.

The program was presented by the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities (CCM) in conjunction with the Campaign School at Yale University.
In addition, another 85 Connecticut residents from 36 communities completed the first or second day of the training.

See attachment for the residents who graduated from the program, receiving a certificate of achievement for completing the entire two-day, 11 hour training; as well as those residents who attended one of the days of the training. ....

In early February, just one day after the House banished Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from congressional committees for incendiary behavior and two days after GOP lawmakers decided by secret ballot to allow Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney to retain her leadership position despite her vote to impeach Donald Trump, a third drama involving Republican women was unfolding in upstate New York. In a case over disputed ballots in the state s 22nd congressional district, a judge ruled in favor of Republican Claudia Tenney, handing her victory over Democrat Anthony Brandisi by a mere 109 votes thereby settling the last undecided race of the 2020 election ....

Despite their political differences, if you were to look at the list of governors for the state of Connecticut going back to Jonathan Trumbull in 1769, there would be one unifying quality that all of them shared they were all white. And with the exception of Ella Grasso and Jodi Rell, they were all male. This tells only a very narrow story of who lived and lives in Connecticut.
When the first census was held in 1790, non-white individuals (comprised of both free and enslaved persons) made up 8 percent of Connecticut’s population. By 2019, nearly 35 percent of the state’s population was non-white. For a country that was founded on the ideal of a government of the people, for the people and by the people, communities of color and native people have been largely shut out of positions of power. ....
