When North Carolina was besieged by Covid-19, Louise Vincent nearly died but it wasn’t the virus that got almost her. She spent months shuffling in and out of clinics, struggling to get appropriate medical treatment, and eventually was poisoned when she attempted to medicate herself in desperation. The medicine she needed was methadone, which is used to help people manage opioid use disorder. She should have been able to access it easily; Vincent helps run the North Carolina Urban Survivors Union, a drug users’ advocacy and harm reduction group. ....

A man holds his prescription for buprenorphine, a medicine that helps treat substance use disorder, as he prepares to take a dose in a clinic in Olympia, Wash. in November, 2019.
Buprenorphine, otherwise known by its brand name, Suboxone, is an essential medication in the treatment of opioid addiction. Access to this therapy remains limited by a unique requirement that prescribing physicians must obtain a special waiver from the US Drug Enforcement Agency after eight hours of certified education. The original legislation, cosponsored by then-Senator Joe Biden in 2000, was focused on increasing access to opioid addiction treatment. The historical basis for this additional training rested in concerns about effectiveness, availability, and adverse health consequences of patients during the transition of opioid use disorder treatment from ....

The Scientific Integrity Act's Reintroduction - Union of Concerned Scientists

The Scientific Integrity Act’s Reintroduction
Jacob Carter,
Research scientist | February 4, 2021, 11:40 am EDT
Last week, the Biden administration released a presidential memorandum to begin the process of strengthening scientific integrity and evidence-based decisionmaking. This week, Congress will get its chance to play a role in bringing science back to the decisionmaking table, as Representative Paul Tonko (NY-20) reintroduces the Scientific Integrity Act. Together, the memorandum and legislation could establish the strongest protections for federal scientists and their work we have ever seen in modern history. These protections would help to ensure that science, not political ideology or industry interests, informs our nation’s policies and protects people’s safety and health. ....

Trump’s new rule restricting EPA’s use of certain science could have short life
Jan. 6, 2021 , 12:45 PM
President Donald Trump’s administration yesterday finalized a controversial rule that would make it more difficult for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to use major health studies to guide pollution regulations. But the new rule which has been fiercely opposed by the scientific community could have a short life. The apparent victory by Democrats yesterday in two Senate races in Georgia is expected to give the party control of the U.S. Senate, and lawmakers could use a rarely invoked law to revoke the rule by a simple majority vote. ....
