Railroads and their development have played a significant role in our region’s history and development.
In Huntingdon County, the restoration and revitalization of the East Broad Top Railroad remains on track.
The East Broad Top in its earliest day in the 1800’s directly tied to the foundation of Pennsylvania’s industrial history it was a coal hauling rail line.
Over the years, there was transformation.
In the 1960’s it became a tourist railroad, with an eye on restoration to preserve the national historic landmark.
At the East Broad Top headquarters at Rockhill furnace, it’s more than just a few rail cars, and track, there’s an entire railroad community with the original maintenance shops and more. ....

Allegheny Foundation funds will help railroad repair picnic area

The Allegheny Foundation of Pittsburgh has made a grant of $100,000 to support the East Broad Top Railroad’s rehabilitation of the Colgate Picnic Grove, the turnaround point for the EBT’s steam-powered trains since 1961.
“This grant is unusual because the Allegheny Foundation concentrates its giving in southwestern Pennsylvania,” said Jane Sheffield, a member of the EBT Foundation’s Board of Directors and chair of its Development Committee. “That they were willing to stretch into central Pennsylvania to support this National Historic Landmark railroad in Huntingdon County is a terrific vote of confidence in the EBT Foundation and its plans for reopening the East Broad Top.” ....
