Frances Burke – Designer of Modern Textiles NOT to be remembered primarily as a fashion icon.
“You’re not … it’s not going to be all about …” Oswald-Jacobs’ pleas are delicate, not to offend this fashion writer assigned to their story; “Not all about … fashion …?”
Well no. But oh. It’s hard to flick quickly past what a crackingly fashionable character Burke was. What a thoroughly modern, elegantly gay, hats-and-pearls working woman of the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s. Her work was not only sought by the seminal young architects of the mid-century modern era but her lady clients were known to commission Burke’s tres chic fabrics for their frocks AND their curtains.

Paris barred most cars from the majestic road that goes past the Louvre Museum, then months later announced it would keep it that way. New York followed suit, making permanent a program that clears space on public roads for walking, biking and, in the case of 34th Avenue in Queens, Mexican folk dance classes.

Forget the green beer and assembly-line corned beef sandwiches: Where are the best Irish pubs and bars in New Jersey for St. Patrick’s Day — and beyond?
My list of N.J.’s best Irish pubs draws on extensive field research and assorted bar crawls (hey, someone had to do it). I’ve raised my share of Guinness pints. My favorite winter/spring brew: a half and half with Guinness and Smithwick’s (I’ll pour one later).
As far as food, if there’s one cuisine that gets less respect than Irish food, it hasn’t been invented yet. But there are few comfort foods more satisfying than a good shepherd’s pie or Guinness stew. Many of the bars on this list are not just festive hangouts any day of the year; they make standout food.
