Great Escapes: Winemaker Dan Petroski's Pandemic Inspirations

Between turning out Cabernet Sauvignon for historic Larkmead Vineyards and California riffs on crisp Italian-style whites at Massican Winery, his own label, Napa Valley winemaker
Dan Petroski
had his hands full. Still, in 2018, when Massican was celebrating its 10

“As a wine brand, I was always struggling with what kind of media presence I wanted,” says Petroski, 47. “Based on my time living in Italy, I could have put a bunch of great

Here Are Wells Fargo's Telecom Trends to Watch in 2021

Cogent Communications Holdings
(CCOI) should be some of the primary Covid-recovery beneficiaries in the sector. Each of their earnings declined in 2020, and all saw some multiple contraction. The result was stocks that badly lagged the market.
AT&T likely has the most cyclical profile of the telecom companies, given its large WarnerMedia entertainment subsidiary. Movie theater closures, canceled or delayed sports events, and cost-conscious advertisers hurt results there in 2020. Verizon has a smaller advertising-reliant segment: Verizon Media, which includes Yahoo and other brands.
“In 2021, we expect the media space to broadly recover, although it could be somewhat choppy and back-half weighted in 2021 (particularly with a still uncertain economic outlook and many movie theaters closed to the public),” wrote Luebchow. “We broadly believe that we will reach (or even eclipse) 2019 media revenues at [AT&T and Verizon] by FY2022, which should be boosted in AT&T’s case by our expectation for broad adoption of its streaming platform HBO Max (which should be more of a beneficiary of broad economic lockdowns).”

CyberArk and Fortinet Stocks Rally as Analysts See Growth in Security Spending

Analysts say cyber-security stocks’ gains can continue.
Dreamstime
Security stocks had a huge run in 2020, with an extra boost from the end-of-the-year revelation of the “Sunburst” hack attack on software company SolarWinds that left almost 18,000 of their customers vulnerable.
Analysts see further gains ahead in 2021, as the attack drives some companies to prioritize spending on detection, preventing and addressing cyber-security issues. Wall Street has been ratcheting up its estimates, stock ratings and price targets in response. On Tuesday, two more analysts joined the bullish chorus.
D.A. Davidson analyst Andrew Nowinski on Tuesday upgraded both
Fortinet
(FTNT) to Buy from Neutral. He raised his share-price targets to $180 from $100 on CyberArk, and to $170 from $130 on Fortinet.

Publisher Simon & Schuster Cancels Publication of Sen. Josh Hawley's Book

Updated Jan. 7, 2021 8:36 pm ET
Simon & Schuster decided to drop the publication of a forthcoming book by Missouri
Sen. Josh Hawley
following what the book publisher called the “deadly insurrection” that took place at the Capitol Wednesday.
Sen. Hawley’s book, “The Tyranny of Big Tech,” had been scheduled to go on sale this June.
In a statement Thursday, the publisher, a unit of
ViacomCBS Inc.,
VIAC -3.65%
said: “We did not come to this decision lightly. As a publisher it will always be our mission to amplify a variety of voices and viewpoints: at the same time we take seriously our larger public responsibility as citizens, and cannot support Senator Hawley after his role in what became a dangerous threat to our democracy and freedom.”

Alibaba Shares Tumble on Regulatory Crackdown in China

Text size
As the year draws to a close, global investors face increasing risks related to China, even as the country offers long-term opportunities.
No one got a harsher reminder of that fact this past week than Jack Ma, the billionaire founder of Chinese e-commerce giant
Alibaba Group Holding
(ticker: BABA), as China’s government decided on Christmas Eve to crack down on the sprawling and hugely successful business.
Beijing launched an antitrust investigation into Alibaba, while Ant Group, the company’s finance unit, was summoned to meet with banking watchdogs to discuss financial regulations. In other words, Alibaba must play by China’s rules.
