Today In Johnson City History: Feb. 4


Feb. 4, 1899: The Knoxville Sentinel, with a dateline of Johnson City, informed readers of several recent accidents in Johnson City. “This week has been one of accidents in Johnson City. The first occurred on Monday, when Mrs. Lum Hall missed her footing and fell from her porch, breaking her leg, and on Tuesday blood poisoning set in, which necessitated amputation of the limb. Her physicians say her recovery is impossible.”
“On Tuesday, Marsh Crumley, moulder at the foundry and machine shops, had his left foot badly burned by spilling hot metal into his shoe and he is now confined to his room and will not be able for duty for several weeks.” ....

Today In Johnson City History: Jan. 21


Jan. 21, 1893: The Daily American, a newspaper in Nashville and with a dateline of Johnson City, reported on people found frozen to death. “The weather here for the past two weeks has been the coldest which has ever been known in East Tennessee, it being from 22 to 31 degrees below zero. This morning Sally Grant, an old lady, was found frozen to death in the road. F.B. Abernathy, a prominent merchant of Bakersville, N.C., arrived here today, and brought news of the finding of an old man by the name of Ellis dead at that place yesterday, he being found frozen to death and his body covered with snow. Several other persons are also reported to have been frozen to death near here.” ....

JANUARY 20
Jan. 20, 1907: With a dateline of Johnson City, readers of the Chattanooga Daily Times learned, “At a meeting of the city council on Thursday night, after the transaction of other business, the council decided to adopt a sewerage system and $10,000 of the city’s bonds will be devoted to that purpose.” Ten thousand dollars in 1907 is currently worth approximately $277,000. Jan. 20, 1914: The Chattanooga Daily Times, with a dateline of Johnson City, reported, “W.E. Hatcher, of the Unaka National bank (sic), left Saturday afternoon for Nash, Tex., where on Wednesday he will be united in marriage to Miss Lillian Soidoiskia Creamer, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James D. Creamer. After spending their honeymoon in the southwest, Mr. and Mrs. Hatcher will return to Johnson City, and will be at home to their friends after Feb. 9.” ....
