Erie-area employers have jobs they can't fill

Bennett, the owner of Transportation Solutions, has jobs she can t fill.
Bennett, whose Millcreek Township company trains student drivers, wasn t surprised when three of her 15 employees chose not to come back to work this past spring following a six-week shutdown prompted by COVID-19 restrictions.
The former employees had health and family concerns. Bennett said she respected their decisions.
But she also expected she would be able to fill those jobs. After months of trying, that hasn t happened. It s a challenge to even get candidates to come in for interviews, she said.
The employment struggles she faces are familiar in many parts of Erie County, where business owners say there is a shortage of available workers. ....

Clarke County employees' health insurance to be self-funded

BERRYVILLEÂ â Clarke County and its school division will self-fund health insurance for their employees at the start of the new year.
Employees will see no changes in coverage or rates, said County Administrator Chris Boies. Their insurance just won t be with Anthem anymore.
A recent months-long dispute between Valley Health System and Anthem prompted the switch.
Self-funded insurance means the county will be its own insurer, using its own funds. Benefit Plan Administrators Inc. (BPA) of Roanoke, a third-party administrator, will process claims on the county s behalf. Employees will access doctors through Cigna s preferred provider organization, said county Joint Administrative Services Director Brenda Bennett. ....

Supervisors approve extra pay for Clarke schools, government employees

Just donât call it a bonus, according to the Clarke County Board of Supervisors.
Following a motion by Millwood District Supervisor Terri Catlett, the supervisors on Tuesday approved the allocation in a unanimous vote. There was little discussion before the vote was taken.
Russell District Supervisor Doug Lawrence suggested that the payment not be called a bonus but rather âa one-time payment in lieu of a pay raise.â The other supervisors concurred.
âOur county and schools employees deserve thisâ money,â said Berryville District Supervisor Matthew Bass.
Plans basically are for all full-time employees who work at least six hours daily to receive $1,000. Those working less than six hours per day are to get $500. To be eligible, an employee must have been on the payroll by Nov. 10. ....
