Old City exhibition of Civil War cartoons immediately taken down

On April 20, the day former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murdering George Floyd, an outdoor exhibition of Civil War-era cartoons was wheat-pasted to a plywood construction barrier on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia’s Old City.
Among the dozens of poster-sized images were some that depicted enslaved African Americans. One featured a portrait of Stephen Douglas, the Illinois senator and rival to Abraham Lincoln, who strongly defended states’ rights to allow for slavery, marked “Patriot.” ....

If you identify as LGBTQ, you’re much more likely to face discrimination in many facets of your life. But what about for housing? Can a landlord evict you or refuse to rent to you in the first place because of your sexual identity or gender identity?
For LGBTQ people, housing discrimination is a big problem. A 2017 study from the Urban Institute found that landlords told gay men about fewer available apartments than straight men, and quoted them higher rent for those apartments. In another 2015 study, 23% of transgender people reported that they had experienced housing discrimination like being evicted or denied a rental in the past year because of their gender identity. And in the Philadelphia region, at least 40% of people aged 18 to 26 who experience homelessness identify as LGBTQ. ....

Philadelphia Set to Ban Pre-Employment Marijuana Testing: What Employers Need to Know | Fisher Phillips

Philadelphia is set to join a small but growing list of jurisdictions (including Nevada and New York City) that prohibit employers from testing prospective employees for marijuana. The proposal, which was recently approved by city council and is expected to be signed by the mayor, will prevent most employers from rescinding a candidate’s job offer due to the presence of marijuana in a pre-employment drug test. Nothing within the bill, however, would forbid an employer from disciplining an employee for impairment or marijuana use in the workplace. If approved by the mayor, the legislation would go into effect on January 1, 2022.  ....

Bill outlawing pre-hire marijuana tests up for a vote in Philly City Council


The bill, spearheaded by councilman Derek Green, would go into effect Jan. 1, 2022 if approved. It passed through a council committee meeting on Monday.
Some exceptions remain for those applying to become police officers or work in law enforcement, any job that requires a commercial driver s license, supervising children or people with disabilities, as well as medical professionals.
Employers who are required by federal contract or law to drug test its employees are also exempt from the bill. 
The Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations would enforce these regulations, Randy Duque, acting executive director, told Metro Philly. If approved, PCHR would use a complaint-based system to enforce the bill. ....
