Can a 'Stop-and-Frisk' Candidate Win New York's Democratic Mayoral Primary?

Can a ‘Stop-and-Frisk’ Candidate Win New York’s Democratic Mayoral Primary?
To progressives’ dismay, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, a hard-line cop supporter, is running strong.

Eric Adams, Brooklyn borough president and a Democratic mayoral candidate, is a former NYPD officer and has called himself ‘extremely conservative on crime.’
Wednesday, May 5 marked the first day of the 2021 New York City mayor’s race in which Andrew Yang did not lead Democratic primary polling. The honor instead went to Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, coming in at 21 percent support; Yang ran second with 18 percent.
The poll, conducted by Washington, D.C.’s GQR, confirms recent trend lines suggesting that Adams has been chipping away at Yang’s lead. ....

Earlier this year, the Housing Playbook Project released the
New Deal for Housing Justice a set of policy recommendations to help solve the U.S. housing crisis, which has been made worse by the pandemic. And The BREATHE Act, a project of the Movement for Black Lives’ 501(c)(4) Electoral Justice Project, offers a radical reimagining of public safety and community care.
Shelterforce, Neighborhood Funders Group, and Funders Together to End Homelessness hosted a conversation on March 10 with people involved in each to discuss the highlights of each proposal and what needs to happen next. ....

Biden opposes defunding the police. Here's what that means

Where would those funds go?
Patrisse Cullors, co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, said defunding the police means reallocating those funds to support people and services in marginalized communities.
Defunding law enforcement “means that we are reducing the ability for law enforcement to have resources that harm our communities,” Cullors said in an interview with WBUR, Boston’s public radio station. “It’s about reinvesting those dollars into black communities, communities that have been deeply divested from.”
Those dollars can be put back into social services for mental health, domestic violence and homelessness, among others. Police are often the first responders to all three, she said. ....

Fox-fueled attacks lie about police reform stance of Biden justice nominees

Fox News is pushing a dark money smear of President Joe Biden’s picks for top positions in the Department of Justice, which falsely suggests these nominees want to “abolish the police.”
In fact, neither Vanita Gupta nor Kristen Clarke, Biden’s choices for associate attorney general and assistant attorney general for the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, has called for the eradication of policing. Instead, both longtime civil rights advocates support police reform that will reallocate funding toward social services for communities of color and away from blunt law enforcement that disproportionately harms these same neighborhoods. Nevertheless, right-wing media and conservative operatives have attempted to falsely conflate this type of strategic “defunding” with wholesale abolition a position neither nominee supports. ....
