Workshop Description: This course examines the history of Tulsa’s Greenwood District from it’s pre-statehood beginnings to its many renaissances, including the present day. Coined “Black Wall Street” by educator and historian Booker T. Washington, Greenwood was the most economically vibrant Black community in the United States for years, in spite of Oklahoma’s brutal segregation laws. Though that entrenched racial divide continues to exist, Black Wall Street is thriving once again.

Contributors’ Notes Hussain Ahmed is a Nigerian poet and environmentalist. His poems and translations are featured or forthcoming in Poetry, AzonaL, Sara Backer’s first book of poetry, Such Luck (Flowstone Press, 2019), follows two poetry chapbooks: Scavenger Hunt (dancing girl press, 2018) and Bicycle Lotus (Left Fork, 2015). Her honors include the 2019 Plough Poetry Prize competition, eight Pushcart nominations, and fellowships from the Norton Island and Djerassi Resident Artists Programs. She holds an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts, lives in New Hampshire, and reads for the Maine Review. (Photo by Leni Sinclair / Getty Images) During the last three decades of his life, the poet John Wieners lived in a one-bedroom walkup at 44 Joy Street, on the back side of Boston’s Beacon Hill. By some accounts it was a drab, minimalist apartment, furnished with wicker patio chairs and decorated with Wieners’s own collages of travel brochures and movie magazines. The refrigerator was empty and unplugged. After he won a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1986, grocery bags of champagne lined the walls replaced, gradually, by the empty bottles.
