Creating theater at a time when all the rules have changed has meant navigating some steep learning curves.
“We’re building the train tracks while the train is moving,” says Igor Golyak, whose Arlekin Players Theatre is partnering with the Baryshnikov Arts Center and Cherry Orchard Festival Foundation for “The Cherry Orchard: A New Media Workshop.” The production combines elements of film, theater, and gaming technology for a new conversation with Anton Chekhov and his final play (Feb. 26 at BACNYC.org, free but registration is required). ....

Leveraging Crisis: Michael J. Bobbitt on Art, Leadership, and Imagination in the Age of Covid-19 | Arts

Every day, Michael J. Bobbitt wakes up at 6:30 a.m. to a quiet house (his husband sleeps in), thumbs through trade papers, maybe listens to the news. Four days a week, he trains with a friend who runs a Black-owned gym in Dorchester. “He kicks my butt for an hour,” Bobbitt said with an easy laugh. Amid the chaos of the world, he maintains a regimented schedule, assiduously protecting his health and his work. During a year marked by what he terms the “dual pandemics” of Covid-19 and systemic racism, these rituals give Bobbitt a sense of normalcy, allowing him to lean into the crisis and lead with compassion. ....

Bobbitt leaving New Rep to become Mass Cultural Council exec director

After a brief but significant tenure as artistic director of Watertown s New Repertory Theatre, Michael J. Bobbitt will depart this month to become executive director of the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
Bobbitt – who joined the nonprofit theater in August 2019 and led it not only in expressing solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, but also in the development of its Strategic Anti-Racism, Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, Access, and Accountability Action Plan, all while simultaneously dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic – will take over leadership of the MCC on Feb. 1.
“I had planned to be at the New Rep for many years, so the timing of this move seemed a little off,” Bobbitt, 48, acknowledged in a recent telephone interview from his home in Cambridge. “But this position with the MCC was too good to turn away from. It’s a tremendous opportunity.” ....

For the past week, club owners and theater operators across the region have allowed themselves to feel something that’s been in decidedly short supply since the pandemic forced them closed in March: hope.
The pandemic relief bill, passed by Congress last week and signed into law by President Trump Sunday, includes $15 billion to support independent music venues, theaters, talent agencies, and nonprofit museums — a critical lifeline for an industry decimated by COVID-19. ....
