Brookline Education Foundation hosts Celebrating Teachers event

Brookline Education Foundation hosts Celebrating Teachers event
COURTESY OF BROOKLINE EDUCATION FOUNDATION
The Brookline Education Foundation recently hosted its annual Celebrating Teachers event in person at the Florida Ruffin Ridley School’s multi-purpose room.
The event, which usually invites all teachers and acknowledges those who recently received grants and awards, consisted of a few guests and the current Caverly Award winners, (Elizabeth) Betsy Davis, BHS French teacher and international student advisor, and Francesca Stark, Driscoll fifth grade teacher.
Davis, who has been teaching in Brookline for 35 years, is known for her kindness, high standards and ability to get the most out of her students. Davis cares about all of her students and creates a sense of caring and community in her class. In addition to teaching French, Davis is the international student advisor and is often the first person new international students meet when they come to Brookline High School.

Collector's secrets: Stories from a Massachusetts license plate expert

Collector’s secrets: Stories from a Massachusetts license plate expert
At one point Stewart Berg had collected 100,000 license plates.

As a little kid in the 70s, Stewart Berg visited the same street in West Roxbury where one house held garage sales every other Saturday morning during the two to three months of summer when the weather stays balmy, and he always sang the same question: “got any old plates?”
License plates, that is.
“I must have bought like 100 plates from this lady. She was right across from this church on Center Street,” said Berg, a local Massachusetts license plate historian and the state’s preeminent collector. “I just remember not hesitating to go there the first thing every Saturday morning to see what kind of new stuff she had … how she was getting some of the stuff and finding these plates was just beyond me.”

Anti-Asian hate: How Brookline can respond

Susan Park / brookline@wickedlocal.com
A few years ago, Brookline parent Soyoung L. Kim was on a trip to Castle Island with her kids when a stranger began yelling at her over a parking issue.
The man didn't say anything racist, but "what I knew in my gut in that moment was that he wouldn’t be yelling at me if I wasn’t Asian," Kim recalled.
Suddenly, a bystander intervened, stepping between the stranger and Kim and telling her, “I am going to stand here and protect you because I am uncomfortable with what I am seeing.”
Reflecting on the moment, Kim said the bystander's actions made her feel safer and comforted her during an upsetting moment.

Waltham Eyes What To Do About Prom Amid State Recommendations

WALTHAM, MA —It's not a ban, but state officials are asking schools in Massachusetts, including Waltham High School, to skip prom for the second year because of the pandemic.
Updated guidance from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education calls the rite of passage "an inherently high-risk activity, as it is a social gathering that involves dancing and singing (both of which are activities with increased respiration)."
Waltham High School associate principal for the senior class, Brenda Peña, also the principal-elect, is leading an effort to figure out next steps in Waltham, according to Superintendent Brian Reagan. Pena did not immediately return request for comment.

Pristine beaches along the Pacific Ocean, a stellar school system, outdoor ice rinks galore, safe neighborhoods, or ample golf courses—depending on priorities, any of these might be deciding factors in choosing the best place to live in America.
To help make a choice, Stacker compiled a list of the best places to live in every state using Niche's 2020 rankings. Niche ranks places to live based on an array of factors, including the cost of living, educational level of residents, housing, and public schools. Each slide includes the total population, median home value, median rent, and median household income. Check out the details of Niche's methodology.

Brookline High School Teacher Raises Concern About How Race Is Taught to Students – NECN

“Teachers over the course of time build those repertoires where they can handle not just current events but highly racialized, politicized events in a way that honors the event itself as well as the multitude of the multiracial voices in our classrooms,” he said.
Brookline's interim superintendent, James Marini, said in a statement, in part, "Brookline is extremely fortunate to have a gifted educator and administrator like Malcolm Cawthorne at Brookline High School. We are committed to better understanding the burden placed on him and other Black teachers to educate our students and ourselves about race in America.”
“Somewhere along the line we have to ask everyone to make sure they’re teaching about everybody," Cawthorne said. "And understand that that takes work.”
