Billions of 17-year periodical cicadas will emerge later this spring in parts of 15 Eastern and Midwest states, including Pennsylvania. Researchers want citizen scientists to use the Cicada Safari app and help with data collection.

An unprecedented citizen science effort gas launched nationwide, as parts of 15 states will see billions of Brood X 17-year cicadas emerge in May or June. The public is invited to help scholars track and better understand this extraordinary natural display. ....

NORTH CAROLINA If your fascination with the upcoming synchronized emergence of 17-year periodical cicadas in the Piedmont of North Carolina exceeds your heebie-jeebies quotient, you have an opportunity to become part of what has the potential to become an unprecedented citizen-scientist effort.
Researchers say billions of Brood X 17-year cicadas will emerge in May or June in parts of Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
In our state, the cicadas are expected to emerge in Cherokee, Surry and Wilkes counties, as well as in Morganton and Murphy around early May. A map of where Brood X cicadas are expected to emerge in North Carolina may be found here. ....

Today s topic is how to put up a no vacancy sign for the Douglas-fir beetles. Most people are aware of the destruction to large swaths of forest trees brought about by a tiny insect group called bark beetles.
In addition to damaging timber resources, beetle-killed trees negatively impact campgrounds residential sites and increase wildfire severity. Research has found that pheromones, which are chemical cues used in communication within a species, are present in bark beetles and produce two types: aggregation and anti-aggregation. 
Aggregation pheromones are released by female Douglas-fir beetles to serve the purpose  attracting mates and large numbers of beetles to come and help them overwhelm the tree defenses.  ....
