NORTH CAROLINA — If your fascination with the upcoming synchronized emergence of 17-year periodical cicadas in the Piedmont of North Carolina exceeds your heebie-jeebies quotient, you have an opportunity to become part of what has the potential to become an unprecedented citizen-scientist effort.
Researchers say billions of Brood X 17-year cicadas will emerge in May or June in parts of Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
In our state, the cicadas are expected to emerge in Cherokee, Surry and Wilkes counties, as well as in Morganton and Murphy around early May. A map of where Brood X cicadas are expected to emerge in North Carolina may be found here.
