Enhancing Sustainability Education in China's Secondary Schools | Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory

May 4, 2021
By Anyi Wang
In August 2019, researchers Allison Bridges, Dong Guo, Satyajit Bose, and Anyi Wang from the Research Program on Sustainability Policy and Management of the Earth Institute at Columbia University visited the Hyde Academy in Beijing. However, the dissemination of sustainability concepts through formal and informal avenues lags behind these achievements and has not kept up with innovative educational advances in other countries. Currently, the pre-college curriculum is highly standardized with no specific focus on sustainability, sustainable development, or environmental responsibility. ....

As we go about celebrating Earth Month and Earth Day, it’s worth reflecting on how far we’ve come since last year’s Earth Day. A year ago, we were a month into the pandemic and I remember foolishly pondering whether there might still be Earth Day events in person. Little did I know that we’d still be isolated after more than a year filled with fear, tragedy, loneliness, frustration, and boredom. At times, it has seemed like the pandemic was too big to solve and that it might never end. ....

Did you know that Americans produce 25 percent more waste than usual between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, sending an additional one million tons a week to landfills? In addition, over two billion Christmas cards are mailed every year, with enough paper to fill a football field 10 stories high. More than 38,000 miles of ribbon are thrown away and usually end up in landfills. Over the holidays, Americans discard half their total yearly paper waste, mostly holiday wrapping and decorations about nine billion tons. And each person wastes almost 100 pounds of food. ....
