National links: Homelessness in CA is driven by prices, not mental illness or drugs

A study from UCSF finds that age and income, not drugs and mental illness, are the primary factors driving homelessness in California. How FEMA’s “managed retreat” flood buyout program might be reinforcing segregation. Why Europe and the US diverge on traffic death rates.

N.H. Community Mental Health Centers Expand Emergency Services

New Hampshire’s 10 community mental health centers continue to move forward with plans to enlarge emergency services, following the approval of increased funding at this week’s Executive Council meeting.
Maggie Pritchard, the CEO of the Lakes Region Community Mental Health Center, says the opportunity to grow is incredibly exciting and daunting.
It’s daunting because the center has struggled to fill open positions, like others in the state. Right now, the Lakes Region center has just under 30 positions open, and most are for clinical staff, according to Pritchard.
Under the new contract, the organization will create six new transitional beds by next summer. Right now, Pritchard says that process involves researching potential locations, property availability and partnerships to start work.

Chris Ann Cleland is a self-described “stickler for details.” That’s why the associate broker for Long & Foster Real Estate in Gainesville, Virginia, almost blew a gasket the other day when she toured a house for sale.
The place was “staged beautifully” with artwork and furniture, Cleland posted recently on the ActiveRain real estate site. But lightbulbs were missing from the bathroom fixture over the vanity. The foyer chandelier contained bulbs of different sizes and shapes. There was “absolutely zero lighting” in the secondary bedrooms, and the master bathroom’s shower had rust stains.

Did you know that Americans produce 25 percent more waste than usual between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, sending an additional one million tons a week to landfills? This COVID-19 holiday season, with online shopping the preferred gift giving method for many, we will likely generate even more waste mailing packages all over the country. In addition, over two billion Christmas cards are mailed every year, with enough paper to fill a football field 10 stories high. More than 38,000 miles of ribbon are thrown away and usually end up in landfills. Over the holidays, Americans discard half their total yearly paper waste, mostly holiday wrapping and decorations—about nine billion tons. And each person wastes almost 100 pounds of food.
