BERKLEY Three Berkley natives are proof that the drive for great accomplishments can t be confined by small town roots. The emergency room at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston currently includes Laura Burke as an attending doctor who completed her residency there a decade ago and her brother Ethan Burke, who started as a doctor in residency, that is to say in training, there two weeks ago. Fellow Berkley native William Fyfe is just graduating from the third-year as a doctor in residency in the same department. Laura Burke said when Fyfe was starting his residency she didn t know that he too was a Berkley native until seeing his biography on the hospital residency website. ....
Incumbent Dean Larabee will be facing off against challenger Michael Kalif in the May 8 election. Michael Kalif, a teacher, believes in conservative ideas Kalif, 64, said he s the candidate for new ideas. I m running for change, he said. I don t like the way things are going in this country or this town. I believe in conservative ideas, and I don t want to be a part of the way the town is run now. Things aren t getting done. He said the only reason there have been no yard signs around town with his name on them is that he s running a low budget campaign. ....
BERKLEY Melissa Eakins-Ryan won t become the superintendent of the Berkley public schools until July 1. But she s already at work. On April 28, she started using the personal time she had banked in her current job as assistant superintendent in Bourne to gear up for her new job in Berkley. She s attended administrative meetings and discussions on the district s new school building program (necessary reconstruction work at the Berkley Community School). She s more than appreciative of having this extra preparation time with retiring school superintendent Thomas Lynch. He has been very gracious to let me spend this time here, she said. I ve appreciated the time to ask questions and understand what this district is all about. Not every district superintendent candidate can do that. Thomas Lynch has been very inclusive and lets me participate. ....
BERKLEY Thomas Lynch will retire as the Berkley School Superintendent on June 30 after 36 years in academia and fifteen years as the accomplished head of the town school system. And he introduced more technology to Berkley students: computers in every Berkley classroom and Chromebooks for every student needing one for the town s COVID-pandemic-era hybrid teaching model, he said. Lynch himself considers these his biggest accomplishments in Berkley. He noted he might have retired a year earlier, except he realized Berkley schools would need guidance through the challenges the COVID pandemic would bring. When I started here in 2005, they didn t have very much technology in the classroom, he explained. ....
