Berlin Superintendent of Schools is recipient of 2021Sylvia Evans Award


BERLIN — For her 38 years of work in education, Berlin Superintendent of Schools Julie King was recognized with the prestigious 2021 Sylvia Evans Citizenship Award.
The award is given out annually by Coos County Family Health Services to honor the “extraordinary, often unrecognized contributions that women have made to the families of our region.”
The presentations were made Tuesday afternoon in an outdoor ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park in Berlin.
“Julie King has devoted her entire career to improving the lives of North Country residents. As a teacher, a principal, and more recently as superintendent of Berlin Public Schools, Julie has prioritized the needs of our North Country youth and their families; she shows us her commitment to improving outcomes for our most cherished resource — our children — every single day,” said Berlin High Director of Special Services Martha Miller in nominating King. ....

Connecticut is receiving an additional 288,000 COVID-19 vaccines this week, according to Governor Ned Lamont. With people 16 years old and older now eligible, the governor said soon he will start planning for parades, graduations and proms.
“If you re going to school, you got your cohort of friends, I would like to think we can have a nice prom this spring,” Lamont said.
NBC Connecticut spoke with Glastonbury Public Schools Superintendent Alan Bookman about it.
“I think that all plans are tentative right now,” Bookman said.
The district is planning to have in-person graduation, according to Bookman. ....

Berlin Public Schools received $641,868 from the latest wave of federal relief funding. 
Schools across the state were awarded a total of $492.4 million under the federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Funds. Over $24 million went to New Britain, Berlin, and Farmington schools.
The funding is designed to allow districts to reduce educational disparities among students that have been further exacerbated from the pandemic, and incorporate additional classroom support, including tutoring and summer school programs. ....
